East Side, West Side Review

Weak
In the early 1930s, director Mervyn Leroy was one of the men responsible for the gritty, careening Warner Brothers house style, but by 1949, Leroy was one of main hack directors for MGM and a prime example of the staid MGM routine is on display in Leroy's prosaic staging of the cad-for-all-seasons East Side, West Side.

Barbara Stanwyck is mistreated high society wife Jessie Bourne, married to Brandon (James Mason), a well-heeled corporate lawyer who is also a regular heel, cheating on Jessie every chance he gets. As Brandon explains his philosophy to a hopeful conquest, "Just because a man has one perfect rose in his garden at home, it doesn't mean that he can't appreciate the flowers of the field." Even so, Brandon tries to "think with his head" but then Ava Gardner breezes in and all bets are off.

Ziegfeld Follies Review

Good
Who knew they made clip shows into movies? Ziegfeld Follies is two hours of skits, songs, dances, and jokes from the dying days of vaudeville, brought to us by a who's-who of yesteryear performers. The film opens, believe it or not, with a deceased Florenz Ziegfeld, looking down from heaven, dreaming about his perfect variety show. What follows is that dream, put to film.

With a tagline like "The Greatest Production Since The Birth Of Motion Pictures," you get a little something like the unmanageable monstrosity that Follies ultimately becomes. Structured as a series of unrelated vignettes, directed by different people (not to mention that screenwriting credit list), it's ultimately just a jumble of parts that add up to less than a whole movie.

Liza Minnelli's estranged husband David Gest is planning to expose some "bombshell revelations" about Michael Jackson in his forthcoming autobiography. The concert producer, 53, has teamed up with writer MARK BEGO to collaborate on the tell-all, which will include juicy stories about Debbie Reynolds, Dionne Warwick, Esther Williams, Cyd Charisse, Martha Reeves and Smokey Robinson. Bego tells the New York Daily News, "He knew a teenage Michael Jackson and he knows some bombshell revelations. "He knows where a lot of the skeletons are buried in that particular story." When asked by the newspaper if Gest will be discussing his estranged wife Minnelli, Bego replies, "I know stories, but I don't know what will make it into print." Minnelli and Gest split in July 2003 - only 16 months after their star-studded March 2002 wedding, which saw Jackson as best man and 17 bridesmaids including Mia Farrow, Chaka Khan and DAME Elizabeth Taylor . Their divorce case is still pending until they resolve lawsuits against each other for spousal abuse and theft.

Singin' In The Rain Review

Essential
Being a child of Star Wars and Pretty in Pink, it's usually hard for my generation to appreciate frou-frou musicals.

Not so with Singin' in the Rain, probably the best musical ever made and 50 years after its original production, its special edition DVD proves it's just as great now as when it was originally produced. If somebody doesn't like this movie, they're either dumb, dead, or both.
