Curtis Mayfield Honoured With Award Tribute

Curtis Mayfield

The R&B/soul star, who died in 1999, will be remembered with the Curtis Mayfield Award, which will be handed out annually at the hall of fame's gala to a rising singer/songwriter whose work "reflects the inspiration, spirit and soul" of Mayfield's music.

The prize, which will be part of the organisation's scholarship program, will be introduced next year (16) and handed out for the first time in June (16).

Mayfield's widow Altheida says in a statement, "It's time to celebrate and re-evaluate Curtis' legacy. He was a genius who always stood on his own."

Cult Soul Hero Terry Callier Dies, Aged 67, Beth Orton Pays Tribute

Terry Callier has passed away at the age of 67. The soul and jazz singer is probably best known for the song 'You Goin' Miss Your Candyman' and with a career than spanned six decades, found renewed interest in his work after his collaborations with artists such as Beth Orton and Massive Attack. Caliier died last night (Sunday, October 28, 2012), after suffering from a long illness, according to The Guardian.

Callier was born in 1945, in Chicago, where he counted Curtis Mayfield and Jerry Butler amongst his childhood friends. In 1962, he auditioned at the legendary Chess Records and recorded his debut single, 'Look At Me Now.' Six years later, he released his debut album, The New Folk Sound Of Terry Callier. His career slowed between his 1978 album Turn You To Love and the 1990s, when he stopped making music professionally and instead became a computer programmer at the University of Chicago. As a new generation of artists share their love for Callier's music in the 1990s, there was a resurgence of interest in Callier's songwriting.

One of those artists, the British songwriter Beth Orton, paid tribute to Callier, who recorded with him in 1997. She has paid tribute on her Twitter page, to her former collaborator, saying "This was one of the best nights of my life. Such a privilege and joy- RIP dear Terry Callier," with a link to the YouTube video (below) of her performing live. A host of other artists and DJs have also paid tribute to Callier, including Gilles Peterson and Tim Burgess of The Charlatans.

Sinead O'connor Scraps Tour To Recover From 'Breakdown'

Sinead Oconnor Curtis Mayfield

Sinead Oconnor has cancelled the remaining dates of her world tour, citing her on-going recovery from a "very serious breakdown". In a statement posted on her official website, the Irish songstress - who suffers from bipolar disorder - said she had scrapped all concerts this year.

According to BBC News, O'Connor has now deleted both her website and Twitter account, though a rather confused spokesman said, "We have had nothing confirmed yet but are working on the assumption that the statement on her website is correct". In the original statement, O'Connor said she was "unwell" and it was with "enormous regret" that she had to make the decision to cancel worldwide dates in support of her critically acclaimed album 'How About I Be Me (And You Be You)?'. She added, "As you all know I had a very serious breakdown between December and March and I had been advised by my doctor not to go on tour but didn't want to 'fail' or let anyone down as the tour was already booked to coincide with album release". O'Connor called her initial decision to perform "stupid" and conceded that she needed to take time out.

O'Connor has endured both health and personal problems in recent months. In December, she announced that she had split from her husband Barry Herridge after just 16 days of marriage. The singer-songwriter has targeted the Curtis Mayfield tribute concert at The Lincoln Center in New York in July as her return.

Bruce Springsteen's Wrecking Ball Embraces The New With Stylish Samples

Bruce Springsteen E Street Band Clarence Clemons Curtis Mayfield Johnny Cash

The long wait is over for Bruce Springsteen 's new album with 'Wrecking Ball' expected to do some damage to the charts upon its release tomorrow following a glut of positive reviews and general goodwill towards The Boss and his E Street Band following the sad passing of their seminal saxophonist Clarence Clemons last summer. Of course those reviews haven't come out of mere pity, many reviewers have commented on Springsteen's attempt to move forward his sound even though, at 17 albums, he'd be forgiven for resting on his laurels and banging out another steady stream of chest-beating calls to arms. Indeed, as the Los Angeles Times points out, among the many liner notes that adorn the booklet of the album, are the references to samples used on the album - which in itself is somewhat of a departure.

The Times points out four tracks that are referenced or used within 'Wrecking Ball;' Alabama Sacred Harp Convention's 'The Last Words of Copernicus' from 1959 features on the Irish-tinted 'Death To My Hometown,' with Church of God In Christ Congregation's 'I'm a Soldier in the Army of the Lord's' features on 'Rocky Ground.'

There's a couple of real heavyweight too; Curtis Mayfield And the Impressions' 'People Get Ready' is referenced on 'Land Of Hope And Dreams' whilst Johnny Cash's seminal classic 'Ring Of Fire' is included on the final track of the album.

Jeff Beck has recorded 11 songs for his album with Rod Stewart.

The veteran guitarist started recording for the planned album after realising his studio jams reminded him of Rod, who was the singer in his Jeff Beck Group in the 60s.

He explained to Gigwise: "Last week I was in San Francisco to just do some recording with my drummer. Then there was one point when it went from Jeff Beck over to Rod Stewart, in terms of the direction.

Whitaker Gets Musical On Saturday Night Live

Forest Whitaker Saturday Night Live Elton John Curtis Mayfield Bobby Brown Maya Rudolph Whitney Houston Al Green Keith Urban

Oscar nominee Forest Whitaker showed off his singing skills when he guest hosted US satirical show Saturday Night Live at the weekend (10FEB07).
THE LAST KING OF SCOTLAND star performed Elton John's DON'T LET THE SUN GO DOWN ON ME in a skit about an over-eager singing waiter and he opened his hosting stint with a rousing version of Curtis Mayfield rights anthem PEOPLE GET READY.
Famous for his serious roles on film, Whitaker also showed off his comic touch, by playing Bobby Brown's uncle TOMMY in a skit starring SNL regular Maya Rudolph as a desperate Whitney Houston trying to come to terms with the break-up of her marriage on a mock TV Valentine's Day special.
As Tommy, Whitaker also performed a version of Al Green's LET'S STAY TOGETHER.
The weekend's Saturday Night Live episode also featured troubled country star Keith Urban's first TV performance since completing three months of rehabilitation for alcoholism.
His performance was ironically sponsored by beer firm Budweiser.
