Boy George: 'Going To Prison Saved My Career'

Boy George Culture Club

The Culture Club singer, real name George O'Dowd, was incarcerated for four months in 2009 after being convicted of falsely imprisoning a male escort in his London home.

George's jail sentence came after a long battle against drug and alcohol addiction and a litany of legal troubles.

In 2006 a New York judge sentenced him to five days of community service, fined him $1,000 ($£710) and ordered him to attend a drug rehabilitation programme after he pleaded guilty to falsely reporting a burglary.

The 54-year-old Culture Club star spent several months in jail back in 2009 after falsely imprisoning a male escort, a bizarre crime fuelled by drugs, but George, real name George O'Dowd, insists he is a changed man and he hopes the public will accept his transformation soon.

“I’ve done some amazing things," he tells U.K. newspaper the Mirror. "I wish people would focus on that rather than the things that went wrong.”

Boy George has enjoyed a successful music career for over three decades, topping charts around the world with hits like Karma Chameleon and Do You Really Want to Hurt Me? He has also enjoyed success as an in-demand club DJ and he's currently a coach on British TV singing competition The Voice.

Boy George: 'Looks Matter On The Voice'

The singing competition was designed to counter other shows, like The X Factor, which put a premium on the look of wannabe singers rather than solely judging them on their vocal ability.

The Voice coaches, including Paloma Faith, Kaiser Chiefs singer Ricky Wilson and Black Eyed Peas star will.i.am, are sat in chairs facing away from singers during the "blind auditions", but the Culture Club star admits he does take appearance into consideration during the rest of the competition.

"I know it's called The Voice but I'd be lying if I said the way someone looks doesn't matter," he told Britain's Metro newspaper.

However, Boy George did not agree, replying to the fan, "My fans should be gracious and kind. Booing, is just rude. I adore @krisjenner and I don't need anyone's approval."

Boy George Feared Bbc Snub Over Drugs And Prison

Boy George Culture Club

The Culture Club frontman was desperate to land a role on hit U.K. singing contest The Voice because he believed a respected position with such an esteemed institution as the BBC would fully restore his reputation after a difficult few years.

In 2005, he was arrested in New York for cocaine possession, although the charge was later dropped, and in 2008 he was jailed for 15 months for assault and false imprisonment over an attack on a Norwegian man in his London apartment.

The singer has since been working hard to rebuild his public image, but he was convinced his ultimate "redemption" of a BBC job would never happen as corporation bosses would not want to be associated with him too closely.

Boy George Dials Back On Romance

Boy George Culture Club

The Karma Chameleon hitmaker has confessed he rarely has a romance these days because they make him feel bad about himself and he feels much happier now he has decided to let them go.

He tells DuJour magazine, "I don't really have relationships anymore, so I don't really have anything to write about in that department. I'm happy, and that's an interesting challenge... I'm not saying I lived my whole life being unhappy, but I always used to draw on drama to write. So my process has broadened out now...

"Well I do (have relationships) sometimes, but they're very different now when I have them. They're not claustrophobic. They're not needy. In fact sometimes I think something is wrong with me because I am not obsessive like I used to be. But I can't bear the thought of ever feeling like that again, even though I got great songs out of it... I just can't think of anything more hideous."

Boy George Annoyed Over Tour Axe Footage

Boy George Culture Club

The Karma Chameleon hitmakers were scheduled to perform shows in the U.S. and U.K. late last year (14) but were forced to cancel the gigs when frontman George was diagnosed with a large polyp on his vocal cords and warned by medics that singing would risk destroying his voice forever.

Documentary-makers filming the group's reunion later broadcast scenes of other bandmembers upset over the cancellation, and George admits he was irritated when the producers chose to focus on the negativity.

He tells British magazine Event, "(It was) very disappointing. I was sick. I had a polyp on my throat. It would have been foolish for me to go out on the road with the problem I had. The tour would have stopped halfway through."
