Courtney Love has penned a message to Kurt Cobain.

The 51-year-old star has written an emotional tribute to her late husband, who commit suicide in 1994, admitting she found it ''so sad'' watching their 23-year-old daughter Frances Bean grow up without him around and questioning 'What on earth' he was thinking when he killed himself, aged 27.

Writing alongside a photo of the Nirvana frontman with the tot in 1992, she posted on Instagram: ''Makes me feel so sad. Our baby is all grown up now. Jesus Kurt look at her face, what on earth were you thinking.. God I miss you, we all miss you #family #memories #turnbacktime#lovehim (sic).''

In a previous post, the Hole frontwoman described the 'Heart-Shaped Box' singer, who she married in 1992, as her ''greatest love''.

She wrote: ''My greatest love and our precious Bean #missyou #memories (sic).''

A documentary about the late star titled 'Montage of Heck' was released earlier this year and the director Brett Morgen revealed Courtney told him she felt closer to Kurt while watching the film than she has since he was alive.

He recalled: ''Courtney said 'No, I want to watch it again. I want to spend some time with Kurt tonight'. She told me it's the closest she's been to Kurt since he died.''
