British singer Corinne Bailey Rae almost landed the lead role in Aretha Franklin's upcoming biographical musical, but her screen test failed to impress the icon. The soul superstar originally wanted Bailey Rae to play her in the new stage show after seeing snaps of the singer, but sadly her television persona proved a let-down. Franklin says, "I almost cast her as one of the characters in my play and in the movie, but when I saw her on TV... well, her pictures look one way and when I saw her on TV she looked a little different so I don't think so." The musical, which is based on Franklin's autobiography Aretha: From These Roots, is set to premiere in Detroit next March (08).
