Both Coldplay and Duffy have the chance to take home three prizes at the upcoming MTV Europe Music awards.
The two acts are both up for the album of the year and the 'most addictive track' awards while Coldplay are in the running for the act of 2008 prize, alongside Amy Winehouse, Britney Spears, Leona Lewis and Rihanna.
Duffy has a shot at the best new act award, though she faces stiff competition from US teen acts the Jonas Brothers and Miley Cyrus, pop-rockers OneRepublic and chart-topper Katy Perry.
Beyonce Knowles, the only confirmed performer for the November 6th ceremony, is nominated for the ultimate urban prize along with Alicia Keys, Chris Brown, Kanye West and Lil Wayne.
Richard Godfrey, senior vice president of MTV, promised the Liverpool award show would feature performances from "some of the biggest names in music today".
"I am confident the bill will live up to our promise that the MTV Europe Music Awards will be the best gig in Europe this year," he added.
Forty bands have been nominated for the best act ever award, with the Beatles and Madonna the frontrunners.
