Down To The Bone Review

Excellent
Drug or alcohol-based plotlines usually follow the predictable formula of working towards cataclysmic redemption or moralizing a main character's journey towards a bottomless pit in order to teach an audience a thing or two. But writer-director Debra Granik takes a different approach with her debut feature, Down to the Bone, and places us alongside living the minutest of struggles of paying the bills and raising kids while overcoming withdrawal from substance abuse.

Poignant but beautifully far from precious, Down to the Bone captures the very human daily tasks that are difficult to contend with while fighting the personal demons of addiction. The characters are not immediately easy to attach to because of their flaws, but it's their effort to grasp the strings of their lives that will lead them to not give up that form compelling performances rich with sympathy and care. You want them to beat the odds, and even when they falter, there is a quiet understanding that they are learning from their poor choices instead of just falling on an old habit because it's there.

Virgil Bliss Review

Good
If it wasn't so washed out, Virgil Bliss might stand as one of the best-looking digital films you can see. Creepily quaint a la Sling Blade, Virgil is released from jail and finds himself unready for dealing with the real world. Case in point: He soon falls in love... with a hooker. And she falls in love with him! And then the problems really begin. It's sweet... but just a little bit too precious at the start and a little too familiar at the end.

Milk And Honey Review

Weak
This story about a jangled night in the life of a few troubled New Yorkers aims for an After Hours-style, nighttime stew of insanity and coincidence but ends up merely showcasing the rather meaningless lives of a married couple who are only fully-developed human beings when separated from each other.

At the start of Milk and Honey, well-off stockbroker Rick (Clint Jordan) and his wife Joyce (Kirstin Russell) are throwing a party as a means of announcing their return to normalcy. Rick has had some mental problems, and has just gotten out of an institution. Unfortunately, it's painfully clear that he's ill-suited to return to the real world, as an innocuous conversation with a couple of co-workers turns into paranoid accusations. Things spiral further out of control when Rick makes a rambling speech and re-proposes to Joyce, who turns him down in front of the crowd, sparking a massive fight between them that has their guests scurrying for the door. Rick soon follows them out, smoldering with resentment.
