When this track first begins to spin you will think the witches from Macbeth have crawled into your speakers and started having a chat, but then you hear the crack of a whip and you realise it’s Clinic’s latest offering, ‘Circle of Fifths’.
The tempo of this track seems to have adopted the infamous Clinic urgency and rattles through at a somewhat eerie pace with the constant dirge of piano throughout.
This track doesn’t really get going until it’s nearly over, a great shame really because the momentum it gathers enthrals and promises much, however, this is shortlived and disappointment has well and truly set in before the track has ended.
Yet, it’s not all bad news for this Scouse quartet, instrumental B-side ‘The Scythe’ is pure rock, oozes the Clinic’s convincing pedigree and holds everything you really wanted to hear in ‘Circle of Fifths’. The vocal really isn’t missed at all and gives us the perfect opportunity to experience the basic elements of this band’s music.
