British singer Cilla Black almost broke down in tears on stage at an emotional concert just hours after she was told of the death of her close friend John Lennon.
The You're My World hitmaker was pals with Lennon and his Beatles bandmates after meeting them in the early 1960s when the group played gigs at Liverpool's Cavern Club - where she worked as a cloakroom attendant - before finding fame.
She was due to play a concert in Bahrain just hours after Lennon was gunned down in New York on 8 December 1980 - and although she agreed to go ahead with the performance, Black admits she was almost overwhelmed with emotion during the show.
Speaking 30 years after the tragedy that shocked the world, Black says during the concert she sang a cover version of Lennon's peace anthem Imagine but was close to tears as she said farewell to the audience at the end of the gig.
She says, "I did go a little bit, on my 'goodnights', yeah. It was emotional."
