The 40-year-old director has revealed the project - which will feature Christian Bale as the titular superhero for the third time - will not feature the Riddler as the bad guy and will feature "many of the same characters" audience-goers are familiar with.
He told the Los Angeles Times: "It won't be the Riddler. We'll use many of the same characters as we have all along, and we'll be introducing some new ones."
Nolan has also confessed the movie will not be in 3-D and will instead be shot in high definition.
Little is known about the plot details of the project, although 'Inception' star Tom Hardy is rumoured for a role and Sir Michael Caine has previously claimed he expects to be involved but nothing has been confirmed.
'The Dark Knight Rises' is expected to hit cinemas in 2012.
