'Interstellar' is premium Oscar-bait - but what do we actually know about the movie?
Christopher Nolan has made an appearance at CinemaCon to talk about his hugely anticipated new sci-fi movie Interstellar. The film has been mostly kept under wraps, though we do know that real-life wormhole scientist Kip Thorne is credited as a producer and Matthew Mcconaughey and Michael Caine star.
Nolan told at an audience at the annual event that he's largely concentrating on the movie's tone, calling McConaughey's character an "everyman" - more Ron Woodruff than Rust Cohle - and describing the film as "using interstellar travel to go to other places you couldn't reach beyond normal space travel," reports Variety.
A huge proponent of the IMAX experience, Nolan says he shot more of Interstellar on IMAX cameras than any other movie he's worked on and said he used spatial interiors and "real environments" as well as filming the actor's responses to action "like a documentary."
On 3-D, Nolan praised Baz Luhrmann's efforts on The Great Gatsby but ultimately noted of the technology, "Just as stadium seating isn't the best thing for a comedy, 3D isn't the best for a shared audience."
Nolan ended his discussion by speaking about the sound mixing, promising theater owners and exhibitors a "unique approach" to mixing for Interstellar - he didn't elaborate.
More: Why Matthew McConaughey could win successive Oscars for Best Actor.
Interstellar is primed for an Oscar-bait release date of November 7, 2014, and all the signs suggest this one could be big. It's got a long history, which began in June 2006 when Paramount Pictures and filmmaker Steven Spielberg announced plans for a science fiction movie about a theoretical physicist. By March 2007, Christopher's brother Jonathan Nolan was hired to write a screenplay and Interstellar remained in development for several years.
We know that Interstellar will focus on the discovery of a wormhole which can connect widely-separated regions of space-time. A team of explorers and scientists embark on a voyage through it to transcend previous limitations on human space travel.
"Here's what I can tell you," McConaughey said about Interstellar during an interview with Variety, "It's the most ambitious thing he's ever done. And he's done some ambitious stuff."
Interstellar also stars Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Casey Affleck and John Lithgow.
