Vacation Review

Weak

Both the characters and the tone have been updated as a new generation of Grizwolds hits the road for a raucous holiday, eliminating the darker edges for a sillier, ruder romp. After the four madcap Vacation movies from 1983 to 1997, the focus moves from Chevy Chase's patriarch Clark to his now-grown son Rusty. As with the earlier films, there are so many jokes flying at the screen that some are bound to make us laugh.

Ed Helms is the fifth actor in five films to play Rusty, and now he's got a family of his own. So he decides to give them a holiday to remember, retracing his childhood trip from Chicago to Wally World in California. His wife Debbie (Christina Applegate) isn't so sure about this, but gamely goes along with it, while their bickering teen sons James and Kevin (Skyler Gisondo and Steele Stebbins) settle into the back seat for the long drive. Along the road, they stop at Debbie's old university and learn a few things about her wild reputation. They also visit Rusty's sister Audrey (Leslie Mann) in Texas, where she's married to a swaggering rancher (Chris Hemsworth). And they drop in on Rusty's parents (Chevy Chase and Beverly D'Angelo). In between, every stop brings a new moment of crazed mayhem.

The script is set up as an homage to the original movie, playfully riffing on the structure and set-pieces. Here, the comedy highlights include a dodgy natural hot springs and a death-defying bit of white-water rafting. All of this is infused with a surprisingly warm family dynamic amid constant gags about excrement and genitalia. Miraculously, writer-directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein never get cynical about the Grizwolds. Rusty and Debbie are still hot for each other, while James and Kevin's vicious rivalry only reveals how much they look out for each other. All four actors are solid, with terrific comical timing and likeable performances.

Christina Applegate's Daughter Is Her Priority

Christina Applegate

Christina Applegate's daughter is her ''number one priority''.

The 43-year-old actress has four-year-old Sadie Grace with her musician husband Martyn LeNoble and after missing out on some key moments in her development due to her role on TV series 'Up All Night' she decided to make her career secondary to motherhood.

Speaking to Mexican newspaper Excelsior, she said: ''Once I had my daughter, I was doing a show six months later ... which I did for two years and I didn't see her, that was something that wasn't right to me, so I had to make a decision truly conscious about how I was a mother before anything else. I took a year-and-a-half off and was with her. In between jobs I spend the majority of my time with my daughter so she knows I'm there. Plus, I enjoy doing things with her so much, she is my number one priority, nothing else is as significant as she is.''

Christina Applegate Owns Jim Morrison Piano

Christina Applegate Jim Morrison

The Anchorman star reveals the owner of the Los Angeles home Morrison once rented wanted to throw out the instrument, so she snapped up the memorabilia at a bargain price.

Applegate admits she has no physical proof that the late The Doors frontman actually tickled the ivories on the piano, but she is convinced it is still a good investment.

She explains, "I used to live next door to the house that he (Morrison) used to live in in Laurel Canyon and this piano had been in this house when he was renting it, so one would assume and know that he'd play that piano, and probably did all sorts of other weird things on that piano!

The Anchorman actress reveals the unlikely pair was among the stars taking part in a staged reading of Shakespeare plays, organised by Tom Hanks and his wife Rita Wilson, in 2013, when she decided to make her childhood dreams come true by planting a kiss on the rock idol.

She recalls, "In the play, the director and I decided - and we didn't tell Paul this, I was the only one to have a scene with him - that at the end of the scene, I was just going to plant a big kiss on him. And I did and he was, like, startled.

"(He exclaimed), 'My wife's in the front row!' and I was like, 'I don't care!' and I turned round and I was like, 'Yes!' and the audience were (sic) like, 'Yes!' and everyone was screaming: 'Yes, Christina, you kissed a beatle!'"

Christina Applegate Regrets Turning Down Legally Blonde

Christina Applegate

The star was finishing up her stint as ditzy Kelly Bundy on U.S. sitcom Married... With Children when she was offered the job as sorority girl Elle Woods, who sets about earning her law degree in a desperate bid to win back her boyfriend.

However, Applegate was tired of being typecast as "a dumb blonde", so she rejected the role, which eventually went to Reese Witherspoon and turned her into a household name.

She tells the New York Daily News, "I kept getting sent scripts for dumb blondes and here's one of my biggest regrets: one of those was Legally Blonde. I just didn't want to play a dumb blonde again. Well, that was stupid."

Hunky Chris Hemsworth Was A Big Hit On Vacation Set

Chris Hemsworth Christina Applegate

The Australian hunk was still shooting Thor when he signed on to play Stone Crandall in the film and he was in peak physical form for the comedy's most revealing scenes.

Hemsworth spends much of the movie wearing very little and flaunting his character's large penis - and Applegate admits it was tough to avert her eyes whenever he was on set.

She tells WENN, "We had all been standing at the bottom of the stairs after he had been doing some fittings upstairs; like should it (prosthetic penis) get into position to go to the left or go to the right, longer, shorter... So finally they narrowed in on the hero penis, I guess! He came down and we were all clapping: 'Ah yeah, that's the one!'
