Christie Brinkley has spoken out about her daughter Alexa Ray Joel's suicide attempt, admitting she doles out ''tough love''.
Christie Brinkley has taken a "tough love" stance in caring for her daughter.
The supermodel's daughter Alexa Ray Joel - whose father is singer Billy Joel - attempted suicide in December 2009 and though Christie is there for her child, she encouraged the 24-year-old musician to seek professional help.
She explained: "Your job as a parent is to listen. And to dole out as much love as you can. That includes tough love.
"I told Alexa, 'You got yourself worked into such a tizzy. You need to examine that, you need to seek professional advice.' "
Christie, 56, admitted that although many people would be able to "relate" to Alexa's actions - which saw her take an overdose of pills so ex-boyfriend Jimmy Riot would realize how hurt she was - she would never do anything similar.
She added in an interview with Ladies' Home Journal: "She tried to do something dramatic to prove to her boyfriend how much he hurt her. I think many people can relate to that excruciating pain of love going wrong.
"I'd rather have a broken arm than a broken heart."
Alexa recently revealed she plans to go back to school to study psychology so she can help other young women in the same position.
She said: "I have many exciting new developments for the New Year. Most importantly, to help young girls with something I feel I know a GREAT deal about: Heartbreak-Related Depression.
"Although it does not get much attention in our society, it is a very serious and painful condition. I hope to bring this topic more to light. I'm even going back to school for psychology in the hope to learn more about this and many other afflictions that many of us have had to face."
