Bale beat cancer survivor Michael Douglas, Geoffrey Rush, Jeremy Renner and Andrew Garfield to win the Globes' first award.
The first TV trophy of the night went to Katey Sagal. She took home the Best Supporting Actress in a Drama honour for biker series Sons of Anarchy. It was the Married... With Children star's first Globe win.
