American funnyman Chris Rock insists getting good grades at school is an overrated achievement - because he learned more from growing up in the midst of drug addicts.

The NURSE BETTY star, who was born and raised in New York's tough Brooklyn area, says he picked up a lot of life's lessons from seeing what was out on the streets.

He says, "Growing up near drug addicts was a good education - it kept me off drugs.

"Grades are kind of overrated. They don't teach work ethic in school, and that's who's going to make it - the kid who works hardest."
