Star Trek Beyond Review

Excellent

This is where the Star Trek franchise officially shifts from thoughtful drama into thunderous action. Fast & Furious director Justin Lin brings a kinetic energy to this third chapter in the rebooted space saga, leaping between chases and battles to keep viewers on the edge of their seats. Combined with constant witty interaction, the film is massively entertaining, even if the plot ultimately feels a bit thin.

It's been three years since the crew of the Enterprise started their five-year mission, and they're in need of a break. So they head to the nearest spaceport for some down-time, which is soon interrupted when Captain Kirk (Chris Pine) and his team (Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg, John Cho and Anton Yelchin) are called to travel through a dangerous nebula to rescue a kidnapped crew from a villainous thug called Krall (Idris Elba). On arrival, the Enterprise is overwhelmed by Krall's bee-like military swarm. Stranded on a strange planet, the crew teams up with Jaylah (Sofia Boutella), a feisty survivor of one of Krall's earlier attacks. And as they realise the extent of Krall's evil plan, they're not sure that they can stop him.

The Finest Hours Review

Excellent

With its rousing, old-fashioned tone, this fact-based epic is properly thrilling and inspirational, a tale of heroism that almost seems too good to be true. But it's the astonishing story of a real sea rescue carried out by ordinary men who rose to the challenge. It's also expertly directed by Craig Gillespie (Million Dollar Arm) to bring out subtle character detail amid the exhilarating action.

The events took place in a sleepy Massachusetts fishing town in the dead of winter 1952, where Bernie (Chris Pine) is an earnest Coast Guard sailor who has just agreed to marry his strong-willed sweetheart Miriam (Holliday Grainger). Then one night a fierce storm breaks an oil tanker in half just off the coast, and Bernie is sent by his aloof commander Daniel (Eric Bana) to lead a rescue mission. He takes his colleague Richard (Ben Foster) and two young crewmen (Kyle Gallner and John Magaro) with him, heading into the dangerous sea swells. Meanwhile on the tanker's still-floating stern section, engineer Ray (Casey Affleck) becomes the leader of a cantankerous 32-man crew, steering the wreckage toward the relative safety of a shoal. And in these conditions, the odds are in nobody's favour.

Unusually, despite pitch-black conditions with driving rain and swelling seas, the on-screen action is crisp and clear. Gillespie uses vivid effects and clever camerawork to keep the audience right in the thick of things, conveying a vivid sense of scale while detailing the connections between each string of events. And because we understand what's happening and who these people are, the set-pieces are literally breathtaking. This is partially due to the fact that these are normal people who are very easy to identify with, from Pine's inarticulate but tenacious sailor to Affleck's reluctant natural leader. Intriguingly, Grainger's Miriam is the film's feistiest character, a woman who simply can't sit still and wait for news.

Chris Pine Felt Humbled By His Role In The Finest Hours

Chris Pine

The story immediately caught the attention of actor Chris Pine. "The script starts and pretty immediately you get involved in essentially a rollercoaster ride of human endurance," he says. "It was just a quick, wonderful, dramatic read. The ocean I find is very daunting, frightening, mysterious and powerful. That intrigued me."

Chris Pine stars in Disney's The Finest Hours

He was also drawn to the story because the characters are "honest, solid, blue collar men that go out and do great things and then go home". So Pine decided to play his character "like an old movie star would play a character in a 50s studio film. It was made by Disney, and there's something so earnest and heartfelt and of another era about it. It wasn't brooding or dark or edgy. It was just good storytelling."

This holiday season brings a rather special twist on the fairytale movie sub-genre, starring the likes of Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, Johnny Depp and Chris Pine. While it's clear that Hollywood is enjoying bringing Grimm and Perrault's stories to life with such creations as 'Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters' and the Emmy nominated series 'Once Upon A Time', 'Into The Woods' goes that step further. With an excellent musical score by the Academy Award winning Stephen Sondheim (composer of 'Sweeney Todd', contributor of 'Dick Tracy' and 'West Side Story' lyricist), we're expecting this movie to join that ever-popular brand of Oscar worthy musical cinema.

Star Trek Into Darkness Given The Thumbs Up By (Most) Critics: Review Round-Up

Benedict Cumberbatch Star Trek Chris Pine Jj Abrams

Star Trek Into Darkness took the UK box office by storm this weekend, and judging by the majority of reviews for the film it's easy to see why. Holding a firm 87% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and a 89% audience rating, the film looks on course to be a great success and is likely to spawn future Trek films too.

Whilst some comment that the film lacks the originality and freshness of it's predecessor, given that it is a sequel this dilema was always likely to occur. But many have found faults in the film besides this, with a number of reviewers harshly criticising the film for varying reasons. The New York Times' A.O. Scott is particularly critical of the style over substance nature of the film, noting that the film "sacrificed a lot of its idiosyncrasy and, worse, the large-spirited humanism that sustained [the series]."

Elsewhere, Liam Lacey of the Globe and Mail was equally critical of the bombastic nature of the film, rather harshly saying that a full viewing of the film is akin to "surviving a long beating."

Star Trek Into Darkness Review

Excellent

After his successful re-imagining of the Star Trek universe four years ago, Abrams dives even deeper into the mythology, which is thrilling for fans but might leave newcomers feeling a bit lost. This sequel surges forward with action, drama, romance and a lot of comedy while constantly nodding back to the earlier TV series and films. And the smart screenplay finds ways to deepen all of the characters along the way, as well as offering an unusually complex villain.

The action picks up soon after the first film ends, as Kirk (Pine) is once again in trouble for disobeying the Prime Directive not to interfere with a planet's culture. But his punishment is short-lived, as Starfleet becomes the victim of brutal attacks in London and San Francisco, sending Kirk, his first officer Spock (Quinto) and the gang (Saldana, Urban, Yelchin and Cho, with Pegg following later) into enemy space to chase the villainous John Harrison (Cumberbatch). But of course, there's a much bigger story going on, and Harrison has a reason for his violent behaviour, leading to a series of terrifying showdowns as they all return to earth.

While the script is packed with shadowy characters, there's not much actual "darkness" in this movie. It's a pretty bouncy, energetic ride, continually making us laugh at tetchy interaction and throwaway one-liners, all of which are cleverly character-based rather than merely silly gags. This gives each actor a chance to shine, with Pegg and Urban offering much of the humour with their amusing crankiness, while Saldana provides the stereotypical female emotional beats. As usual, the strongest scenes are between Kirk and Spock, and their shifting bromance is well-played by Pine and especially Quinto. But dominating the whole film is a meaty turn from Cumberbatch as a particularly fearsome nemesis who also happens to be both brainy and openly emotive.

Benedict Cumberbatch Fell For 'Neutron Cream' Prank On Star Trek: Into Darkness Set

Benedict Cumberbatch Jj Abrams Chris Pine

Benedict Cumberbatch - the star of the new Star Trek movie Into Darkness - has admitted he fell for cast-mate Chris Pine's elaborate prank on the set of the movie. Appearing on Graham Norton's chat show - set to air tonight (May 2, 2013) - Cumberbatch explained how he was persuaded to wear "neutron cream" to protect him from dangerous lasers.

"We were in a really futuristic laboratory with lasers that were trying to split a target smaller than a human hair to create a continual form of energy," explained Benedict. "And I was like, 'Wow, this is the real deal, what can't we touch? What's safe?" He continued, "I got on set and was told I needed to wear 'neutron cream' to protect me. I was gullible and did what I was told, it's America and there is a lot of health and safety." Pine, 32 - also making an appearance on the show - laughed, "And we told him he had to apply the cream in dots all over his face and there he was doing this really intense scene with sunscreen spots all over him." Cumberbatch, who plays shadowy villain John Harrison in J.J Abrams new movie, took the jibes in good humour, telling the audience, "I should have known. They had me, completely had me. It was really very funny."

Kim Cattrall and Eurovision singer Bonnie Tyler also make appearances on tonight's show, from 10.35pm.

Zoe Saldana Dons Futuristic Looking Dress For "Star Trek Into Darkness" Premiere

Zoe Saldana Chris Pine Benedict Cumberbatch

The crew of Enterprise all looked flawless last night on the red carpet of the Star Trek Into Darkness premiere. Zoe Saldana, who reprised her role as Nyota Uhura from J J Abrams’s 2009 film, graced the premiere in a futuristic looking black and white gown. Unfortunately, the breezy fabric meant she had a couple of brushes with a potential wardrobe malfunction, but at least she looked fabulous throughout. Her co-stars, Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto got decked out in classic ensembles in grey and blue. Newcomer to the series Alice Eve, on the other hand, decided to go with a strapless suede Ermano Servino number and she did not go wrong, looking perfectly polished throughout the night.

The actress looked radiant as she posed for pictures on the night of the premiere.

Star Trek Into Darkness is the second film in the series, reimagined by JJ Abrams and it is set to hit theatres May 9th. It follows the exploits of Kirk, Spock and the rest of the Enterprise crew, as they on a mission to halt an unstoppable force of terror from within Starfleet- said force is being played by Benedict Cumberbatch in the upcoming film. So while all we have to at this point are photos from the premiere, there is certainly a lot to look forward to in this film. Be excited. Be very excited. Star Trek Into Darkness Trailer: Is Benedict Cumberbatch The Best Villain Yet? (Trailer)

Benedict Cumberbatch Chris Pine Jj Abrams

Roll up, roll up, see Benedict Cumberbatch as you've never seen him before in the new trailer for J.J. Abrams' Star Trek Into Darkness. The British actor, best known for playing Sherlock Holmes in the BBC's much vaunted series, plays mysterious villain John Harrison in the action sci-fi flick and is seen wreaking havoc in London throughout the trailer.

It's credit to the cast and crew of Into Darkness that little is known of Cumberbatch's character. Rumors last year suggested he was reprising the classic Star Trek villain Khan, though that now appears wide of the mark. The trailer gives little away as to his identity, though the actor is seen sporting a long black coat and throwing various menacing stares. "You think your world is safe, it is an illusion, enjoy these final moments of peace," he cryptically warns in the opening scene before asking, "Your commanders have committed a crime I cannot forgive, none of you are safe. Have I got your attention now?"

The Coy JJ Abrams: "Things Become Less Secretive Online"

Jj Abrams Benedict Cumberbatch Chris Pine Zachary Quinto

Jj Abrams - the writer and producer behind the forthcoming Star Trek movie - has discussed the secrecy behind his various projects and explained while he refuses to offer fans bonus footage before release dates. The creator of Lost is known for keeping the details of his projects under wraps, though insists it's for the viewer's overall benefit.

"I will sit in a meeting before a movie with 80-some people, heads of departments, and literally say that all I ask is that we preserve the experience for the viewer," Abrams told Entertainment Weekly, "Every choice we make, every costume fitting, every pad of makeup, every set that's built - all that stuff becomes less magical if it's discussed and revealed and pictures are posted online. I just want to make sure that when somebody sees something in a movie they didn't watch a 60-minute behind-the-scene [video] that came out two months before." The hype for Star Trek Into Darkness is beginning to reach fever pitch, with both Abrams and several of his cast-members getting hacked-off with the clamour to discover who Benedict Cumberbatch will be playing. Fans and reporters have suggested the British star will portray legendary villain Khan, though pretty much everyone involved with the project has denied this. Abrams hinted at the speculation, saying, "It's only fun to keep things quiet when it finally comes out as scheduled, because then you feel like, 'Oh I didn't just spend six months ruining the movie for people. It's not fun during the experience of withholding. Because then you sound like a coy bastard . and you're sort of being a jerk."

Star Trek Into Darkness - also starring Zachary Quinto and Chris Pine - hits cinemas in the U.S. and UK on May 17, 2012.

As the year winds down, critics are making lists and checking them twice to decide which filmmakers have been naughty or nice. Top 10s are appearing everywhere, along with awards and nominations and even some worst of the year lists. And most film fans are anxiously awaiting the emergence of a front-runner in the Oscar race.

So far the love has been spread around between year-end releases like Steven Spielberg's Lincoln, Kathryn Bigelow's Zero Dark Thirty and Ang Lee's Life of Pi, all of which earned key nominations from the Golden Globes last week and the London Critics' Circle Film Awards this week. Perhaps not quite so awards-worthy is the new Tom Cruise action romp Jack Reacher, which opens on Christmas.

Star Trek Into The Darkness Trailer Entices Us Further

Jj Abrams Chris Pine Zachary Quinto

The new teaser trailer for Star Trek Into The Darkness does exactly what it should do: it teases. The film isn't out until the summer of 2013, but these trailers have got sci-fi fans licking their lips at the next instalment of the Star Trek saga.

In a trailer full of action, which we've come to expect from director Jj Abrams, Pike tell Kirk, "There's greatness in you, but not an ounce of humility.  But there's going to come a moment when you're wrong about that.  And you're going to get yourself, and everyone under your command, killed." The film's synopsis give us our only clues to the plot line, while everything else is garnered from scrutinizing trailers. It reads, "When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis.

"With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction.

Rise Of The Guardians Review

Excellent

Vividly colourful details in the animation and script bring mythical characters to life in ways that are thoroughly engaging as this riotous action-comedy soars through its epic story. It's a bit frantic, barely pausing to let us admire the artistry, but it's a lively thrill-ride of a movie that will keep both adults and kids on the edge of their seats.

Jack Frost (Pine) is a lonely boy no one else can see, so he has no idea why he exists at all. He fills time creating snowy-icy mischief to make children laugh, and feels out of his depth when he is summoned by the Guardians of childhood: burly Russian Father Christmas (Baldwin), tough-talking Aussie Easter Bunny (Jackman), fluttering Tooth Fairy (Fisher) and wordless Sandman. They need him to help them defeat Pitch (Law), a boogeyman who is replacing children's imaginations with nasty nightmares in an effort to get them to believe only in him. So while Jack works out a plan to get rid of Pitch, he also needs to figure out if he belongs with the Guardians.

Screenwriter Lindsay-Abaire and the animation team have a lot of fun with the characters, which are loosely based on the William Joyce novels. Each person is fully formed, with terrific vocal work from gifted actors who pack their characters with personality, especially Baldwin and Jackman. So their interaction zings with attitude even as the imagery bursts with hilarious details. Since the story is centred on Jack, he's the one who carries us through, and he's an engaging reluctant hero in the vein of Harry Potter or Frodo Baggins. Watching him discover his own inner skills is often exhilarating.

Forget The Hobbit, Star Trek Into Darkness To Preview Before Lord Of The Rings

Peter Jackson Chris Pine Zachary Quinto

Fans of Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings franchise will get an extra special treat should they head to their nearest IMAX 3-D cinemas to watch The Hobbit this festive season. Paramount Pictures has announced it will release the first nine minutes of J.J Abrams new Star Trek movie Into Darkness immediately before Jackson's new epic.

Nine minutes is a considerable sneak peek of a movie not set for release until May 2013. It also represents the first time that exclusive footage has played on IMAX 3-D screens. "Our longtime partners J.J. Abrams, Bryan Burk and the Bad Robot team have really hit it out of the park," said Imax Filmed Entertainment president Greg Foster in a statement on The Hollywood Reporter, "The footage is absolutely incredible." Abrams new movie welcomes back Chris Pine as a young Captain Kirk while Zachary Quinto plays Mr Spock, as he did in the 2009 original. Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch will star as the villain, though the specifics of his role have been kept safely under wraps. The British actor has remained coy on the issue, though did tell Shortlist, "I'll tell you this - it's iconic and it's exciting. I'm bored of denying that it's Khan now, because people keep saying it. It's a great part and it's really well written. I enjoyed the fights and the stunts, there's lots of that and it really is properaction movie territory."

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey hits cinemas in the U.S. on December 14, 2012. Star Trek Into Darkness hits on May 17, 2013.

People Like Us Review

Good

There's an intriguing true story buried inside this overly structured drama, and by playing by simplistic screenwriting rules the filmmakers make everything trite and predictable. Fortunately, the cast is much better than the material, and they bring their characters to life with jaggedly engaging interaction and some resonant emotion.

The story centres on Sam (Pine), a fast-talking New York salesman who is in big trouble professionally. So when his estranged father dies in Los Angeles, it gives him a chance to escape. He heads off to see his mother (Pfeiffer) and find out what he has inherited. But the lawyers hand him a bag of cash that he has to give to smart 11-year-old Josh (D'Addario), whose barmaid mother Frankie (Banks) is the half-sister Sam never knew he had. Without revealing his identity, he worms his way into Frankie and Josh's life. But the Feds are catching up with him, and Frankie is about to learn who he really is.

This is one of those films that hinges completely on the characters' inability to talk to each other. So one honest conversation at the beginning would make this a very short movie! But no, the screenwriters force everything into an unnatural formula that completely undermines the genuinely interesting things going on. Even so, the actors manage to hold our interest, mainly due to some terrific chemistry. At the centre, Pine nicely holds his own in scenes with the wonderful Pfeiffer and Banks, while D'Addario proves to be a young actor to keep an eye on. Meanwhile, side characters add texture, most notably Duplass as a neighbour with the hots for Frankie, and Wilde as Sam's frazzled girlfriend.

This Means War Review

Very Good
A lively pace and a nicely warped sense of humour help make this paper-thin action-comedy a mindlessly enjoyable romp. Sure, the central romantic triangle never really gels, but the bromance subplot is rather sweet.

Frank (Pine) and Tuck (Hardy) are best-pal CIA operatives who wouldn't know the word "subtle" if it clubbed them over the head. After a chaotic case in Hong Kong, they're grounded back home in L.A., and both decide to use the down time to find women. The problem is that they find the same woman, Lauren (Witherspoon), who struggles to decide which one is right for her. Certainly her married best pal Trish (Handler) is no help. The bigger problem is that Frank and Tuck use the agency's resources to sabotage each other.

Carriers Review

Good
Well-made but not particularly inventive, this post-apocalyptic thriller is like a college road movie crossed with Mad Max. The cast is much better than this thin script deserves, but the film does generate some great jolts.

Brainy Danny (Pucci) and his more action-oriented brother Brian (Pine) are driving through Colorado with Brian's girlfriend Bobby (Perabo) and their friend Kate (VanCamp) when they encounter a man (Meloni) who's trying to get his sick daughter (Shipka) to a clinic. She has the highly contagious disease that has killed off almost everyone, so extreme measures are needed to prevent infection. As they continue across the Southwest, heading for a Gulf Coast beach they remember from childhood, they encounter various other survivors and are forced to make some brutal decisions.

Star Trek (2009) Review

Excellent
With one film, J.J. Abrams has made Star Trek younger, flashier, sexier, funnier, and less intelligent, but more exhilarating than it has been in decades. By altering the franchise's storied past, he ignites a fevered barn-burner that's geared toward today's action junkies but also sets the stage for what could be a long and prosperous future.

Abrams' stylized reboot isn't the finest film in the 10-picture series, which dates back to 1979's Star Trek: The Motion Picture. That distinction still belongs to the second Trek feature, The Wrath of Khan, though Abrams and co-screenwriters Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman wisely allow that film to influence most of their creative decisions.

New Captain Kirk Talks

Chris Pine Captain Entertainment Weekly John Cho Karl Urban Lord Of The Rings Simon Pegg Star Trek Take That William Shatner Zachary Quinto

Chris Pine, the actor set to play Captain Kirk in the upcoming Star Trek film, has talked of the pressures of taking on the iconic role.

Smokin' Aces star Pine is to step into the shoes of William Shatner in the JJ Abrams picture which tells of the adventures of the Starship Enterprise during their time at Star Fleet academy.

Though he confirmed he would reveal "not a thing" during an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the 27-year-old did let slip some small details about the movie, set for a Boxing Day release.

"I think the biggest mistake I could ever do would be to try to recreate what Mr Shatner did," he explained. "There are certain qualities that Kirk has that are vital for someone who is a leader of men.

"And those qualities, I definitely wanted to take from what Mr Shatner did in the original series. But my job is to take something new, to Take That and build upon it, really do my own thing. I just feel no pressure when it comes to that."

The young actor admitted he can understand the fears of hardcore fans but attempt to allay some of their concerns.

"I don't have that many credits and people are very worried that their Kirk is going to be destroyed. But I can only say that we're having a great time. JJ has been wonderful and the cast is phenomenal. I think what we're doing is very special."

Pine said he had not met Shatner, but added: "I've met Mr Nimoy a couple of times. He's been on set and we have a couple of scenes in the film, which will be nice, and I'm excited for those."

Though Heroes star Zachary Quinto is to play the young Vulcan, Pine's comments could imply that time travel is featured in the movie or that flashbacks will be used.

After a call for 'odd-looking' extras, much of the movie's major casting has been completed.

British comedy favourite Simon Pegg will play the young Scotty, Lord Of The Rings actor Karl Urban stars as Leonard 'Bones' McCoy and comic actor John Cho plays Mr Sulu.

Smokin' Aces Review

OK
A double-decker, monster-man sandwich of a movie with all the condiments dripping off and the tomatoes soaking through the bread, Joe Carnahan's Smokin' Aces grabs you by your lipstick-smudged collar and chucks you headfirst into a car-crash dizziness of crime, punishment, and bureau hobgob. As with most directors, Carnahan is eager to put the giddiness of his debut, Blood, Guts, Bullets & Octane, on top of the professionalism of 2002's brooding Narc, only too happy to throw in a who's-who of dynamite character actors to add flavor. Flipping scene-to-scene with a racecar driver's patience, Smokin' Aces quickly engages the viewer but just as quickly stuffs the plot with enough peripheral storylines to garner an Advil intermission. Carnahan, however, seems only the merrier to turn the mayhem up to eleven. Here's the scoop: Buddy "Aces" Israel (Jeremy Piven) has turned states evidence and has been marked to be deposited in an unmarked grave, heart removed and in the hand of the invalid Don of the Las Vegas mafia. Quicker than you can say Vincent Vega, a plethora of gun-totting, knife-brandishing assassins are descending on the Lake Tahoe hotel where Israel has commandeered the penthouse suite and filled it with enough blow and prostitutes to garner a Motley Crue reunion gig. There's a sexually-ambivalent pair of Jackie Brown's (scene-stealers Alicia Keys and Taraji P. Henson), a trio of Nazi-punk, south-bred Mad Max's (led by dirtied-up pretty-boy Chris Pine), a relentless torture artist (Nestor Carbonell), and a superbly vicious Ethan Hunt-type mask-wearer named Lazlo Soot (Tommy Flanagan). Oh, and not to mention a bail bondsman and two ex-cops (Ben Affleck, Peter Berg, and Martin Henderson) hired by a Herpes-positive lawyer (Justin Bateman).Israel's right-hand man Sir Ivy (hip-hop ingénue Common in a solid acting debut) has suspicions on Buddy's loyalty as the bureau chief (Andy Garcia, his cheeks tight enough to brandish a diamond ring from a lump of coal) deliberates on whether Buddy is essential to the FBI's case or not. To fast-track the proceedings, two FBI agents are sent to pick Israel up, played with welcome integrity by Ray Liotta and Ryan Reynolds. This is all confounded by a paint-by-numbers mystery about the Las Vegas Don's origins and his hand in an FBI agent's death. Not for nothing, Carnahan's big mess has a stunningly concise tone to it, not trashy enough to be campy and not serious enough to be harshly considered. There's no denying, however, that Smokin' Aces is a backpedal from the grimy cop paranoia of its predecessor. Ultimately, many of the characters are superfluous to the kinetic frenzy of the film and come off as cameos (Bateman, Affleck, and a surprise Matthew Fox head the list). This also lends itself to a problem of absurdly curt storylines that seem to mass into a rubber-band ball of narratives. That being said, it's still a kick to watch Carnahan go all in, pulling out some primo action scenes including a climactic shoot-out that ends with an assassin taking a chainsaw up the keister. The effect sprays about as much bodily fluid to the ironically-named Nomad hotel as one could imagine from a Tarantino disciple with time and money on his hands.Aces high.

Buddy "Aces" Israel (Jeremy Piven) is a Vegas card sharp come gangster and former member of the La Cosa Nostra (LCN), one of the largest criminal organizations in the United States. In exchange for a vanishing act with Witness Protection, Israel (who is currently hiding out in the penthouse of The Nomad Casino in Lake Tahoe with his posse of bodyguards and hookers), has agreed to testify against his former mentor, Primo Sparazza, and the LCN.
