National Lampoon's Van Wilder Review

Terrible
It's sad that visual jokes about male bodily fluids no longer shock audiences. Now, for films to surprise us, they must include jokes about the fluids of other animals. Van Wilder, the latest installment in the never-ending National Lampoon series, doesn't stop with just a joke, however. It actually contains a scene wherein characters consume dog semen.

Perhaps in a sick, twisted way, the concept of a person unknowingly consuming animal semen could be somewhat amusing. But actually watching a character manually stimulate a canine with oversized testicles is not funny. The scene continues with the character filling donuts with the ejaculation and then feeding the pastries to his peers. The sequence concludes as characters squirt the contents of the food into their mouths. This is a point when gross-out humor simply becomes too gross to qualify as humor.

Dear Wendy Review

Terrible
For the most part, 2005 was a great year for movies about something. I won't go through all the titles, but it was obvious that for once in a very long time, directors were good and angry. So, it comes as a large disappointment that Thomas Vinterberg's Dear Wendy fails to get away from its own self-masturbatory America-is-stupid letterhead of war as a means of peace. Gee, I wonder if Vinterberg and screenwriter Lars Von Trier are talking about Bush's "war for peace" and America's botched pacifism.

Set in the unidentifiable town known as Estherslope in some unknown time (confusing since there is a huge Axe deodorant spray advertisement in one scene), Dick (Jamie Bell) lives with his miner father and Clarabelle (Novella Nelson), the family maid. He takes a job at a supermarket and generally acts lonely constantly, especially when his father dies in the mines. At the supermarket, he meets Steven (Mark Webber), a young man exactly like him. Things light up between them when Steven sees Dick with a small gun that Dick thinks is a toy; it isn't. They begin to meet, and slowly form the Dandies, a gang of people who love guns but never use them. All is well in their lives until the sheriff (Bill Pullman) puts Dick in charge of checking in on Clarabelle's grandson, Sebastian (Danso Gordon), a small-time murderer. Sebastian takes liberties with Dick's gun (the titular Wendy) and, well, things don't end well.

American Pie 2 Review

Excellent
The gang from American Pie is back in American Pie 2, or, I Still Know What You Screwed Last Summer. The immortal pie, of course, is gone, but there are plenty of foreign objects and luscious ladies to occupy the genitalia of the entire cast for a full hour and a half.

After reinventing the sex comedy in 1999's American Pie, AP2 had a high bar to live up to, and miraculously, it has done so. It actually outdoes the original (by a mile) when it comes to juvenile and crude humor. And the sex gags... jeez, the dick jokes come rapid fire, one every minute. It ain't Woody Allen, but damn if it isn't utterly hysterical.

Dorm Daze Review

Bad
National Lampoon used to be a name associated with juvenile yet genuinely funny comedies like Animal House and Vacation. But don't stop reading just yet: National Lampoon is actually still around!

Sadly, today's Lampoon is pretty much a factory for terrible teen sex comedies, few of which I daresay you'll have heard of. They have names like Senior Trip, Repli-Kate, and Golf Punks. In recent years only Van Wilder has merited a theatrical release.

October Sky Review

Very Good
This true story (well, based on one anyway) tells the tale of Homer Hickam, a go-nowhere coal miner's son who, in the late 1950s, decides to take up amateur rocketry for no discernable reason. Secretly, this is a movie about overcoming adversity and fatherly love, and the sentiment is heaped on so high you can't help but shed a tear. Stand By Me meets The Right Stuff.

Gold Diggers Review

Terrible
I can't blame you for taking in interest in Gold Diggers. Box cover girl Nikki Ziering has those skanky porn-star looks that your eye is immediately drawn to, and the promise of excessive nudity on her part looks readily doable.

Surprise: Ziering is barely in the film at all, and her few scenes are so clumsily grafted into the picture that even the most pathetic pornographer would be shamed by witnessing them.

National Lampoon's Van Wilder Review

OK

Have campus comedies really reached the point where fashionable, ante-upping gross-out gags are obligatory? I mean, do we really need a movie in which bulldog semen is served in pastries to unsuspecting frat jerks?

I ask only because "National Lampoon's Van Wilder" has such hilariously droll dialogue and such a witty, charismatic lead in Ryan Reynolds (of TV's "Two Guys and a Girl") that it's just bursting with untapped crafty comic energy that has been redirected toward the lowest of the lowbrow.

Reynolds emits an aura of smarmy charm in the title role of consummate collegiate slacker Van Wilder who, after seven years as Big Man On Campus and $40,000 in tuition, has been cut off by his fed-up father (played by Tim Matheson in one of the flick's many nods to "Animal House").

October Sky Review

Excellent

Although "October Sky" is a film with no surprises from its soundtrack of '50s rock 'n' roll standards to its triumph over adversity themes, this teen-years biography of a NASA scientist who got his start building rockets in his basement is so full of spirit and letter-perfect filmmaking that I defy anyone to watch this movie without getting a tingle in his or her heart.

Thrilling in the best sense of the word, traditional without being corny and with a script, photography and symbolism that could be the basis of a film literature textbook, "October Sky" is a classic in the making. It's just a pity it wasn't released in time for Oscar consideration.

The picture stars Jake Gyllenhaal as Homer Hickman, a coal miner's son determined to break away from his assumed destiny following in his father's bleak and dangerous subterranean footsteps.

American Pie 2 Review

Bad

Back from their freshman year at college, the sex-crazed gang from "American Pie" rent a beach house and party hardy for the summer in the inevitable assembly-line sequel "American Pie 2."

Pastry-plugging loser Jim (the insufferable Jason Biggs) is waiting for a visit from Swedish exchange sexpot Nadia (the vapid Shannon Elizabeth), whose interest in him still isn't adequately explained. Loud-mouthed lecher Stifler (Seann William Scott) is still obsessed with nailing anonymous bimbos. Finch (Eddie Kaye Thomas) is still obsessed with bedding Stifler's mom (Jennifer Coolidge).

Oz (Chris Klien) is still hopelessly devoted to Heather (Mena Suvari), who only shows up about three times in the movie, calling on the phone from Europe. Freaky flutist Michelle (Alyson Haningan) is back at band camp, where Jim pays a visit for sexual advice. Former virgin Kevin (Thomas Ian Nicholas) is pining for former virgin Vicki (Tara Reid), who has moved on.
