Ever Wondered Which SATC Characters Oprah And Gandhi Would Be?

Cynthia Nixon Sarah Jessica Parker Kim Cattrall Kristin Davis Mario Cantone Chris Noth Oprah Winfrey Beyonce Knowles Lena Dunham Hillary Clinton

Appearing on the chat show 'Watch What Happens Live!' last Thursday (30 April), Cynthia Nixon was asked by host Andy Cohen to suggest which 'Sex and the City' characters a variety of famous faces would be. And the results were certainly interesting: the actress was quick to name Queen Elizabeth II as Charlotte, both Oprah Winfrey and Michelle Obama as Carries, and Beyonce as Samantha.

But who does Cynthia think would make a good Miranda, the feisty lawyer she played in the popular HBO series? She reckons Hillary Clinton, Lena Dunham and Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg would all be a good fit. And then there's Gandhi, who would be - who else - Mr Big, according to Cynthia.

Elsa & Fred Review

OK

While this geriatric romance is too simplistic and sentimental to be anything remarkable, its lively central performances add some badly needed subtext and make the film worth a look. Meanwhile, the supporting cast add some spark to their scenes, elevating the warm, silly drama with quirky humour and some more resonant themes. It's also remarkably honest about how it feels to grow older.

Set in New Orleans, the story starts as 80-year-old Fred (Christopher Plummer) is moved by his hyperactive daughter Lydia (Marcia Gay Harden) into a small apartment building. Fred's wife has recently died, but they didn't get along very well, so he's enjoying being on his own. Although Lydia's husband (Chris Noth) has yet another crazy business scheme he wants Fred to invest in. And his new next door neighbour is Elsa (Shirley MacLaine), a larger-than-life 74-year-old who claims to have once known Picasso. Her son Raymond (Scott Bakula) looks in on her from time to time, while she secretly supports her younger son Alec (Reg Rogers) in his artistic career. She also immediately starts trying to coax Fred out of his shell.

Obviously, the main idea is that you're never too old to fall in love, so director-cowriter Michael Radford (Il Postino) tries to balance a comedy about ageing with a sweet love story about an engagingly mismatched couple. The blend of genres is somewhat uneven, as the script never quite decides whether it's about making the most of the time you have left, being open to unexpected romance or accepting your family members for who they are. All of these big themes are in here, most with a fairly heavy-handed touch. But at least this means that the film is about more than just a bunch of goofy characters interacting in rather silly ways.

Is 'Sex and the City' 3 Really Such A Good Idea?

Sarah Jessica Parker Chris Noth

Sex and the City executive producer, Michael Patrick King, has hinted that there may be another movie in the pipelines. HBO’s hugely successful series Sex and the City ran between 1998 and 2004 and practically defined, and revolutionised, an entire generation of women. Who didn’t live vicariously through Samantha's sex life, or start believing that men really can change when Big finally came through in the end?

sex and the city 3 Will the girls be returning for a third Sex and the City movie?

Fans of the show felt that they knew Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda intimately (in every sense of the word) when the show concluded in 2004, and you’ll still hear ‘the girls’ used in reference today, a decade after the show finished.

Lovelace Review

Good

An unusual structure gives this biopic a surprising kick as it explores both sides of the porn industry: the glamour and the sleaze. Oscar-winning documentary filmmakers Epstein and Friedman (The Times of Harvey Milk) keep things so balanced that it sometimes feels a bit clinical, never letting us feel the intense emotions that gurgle throughout the story. But it's a strikingly well-made film with a terrific all-star cast.

It also cleverly looks like it was actually made in the early 1970s, the period in which it's set. This is when 21-year-old Linda Boreman (Seyfried) left the home of her harshly religious parents (Stone and Patrick) to live with her free-spirited boyfriend Chuck (Sarsgaard). By 1972 she was the most famous porn-star on earth, as the lead actress in the crossover adult movie Deep Throat. But the glamorous lifestyle covered a much darker reality: that the abusive Chuck forced her to make the film while selling her body to anyone willing to pay. And it took her several years to break free, tell her story and stand up against the industry that used her.

Cleverly, the film carefully lays out the male-dominated culture in the industry along with the jet-set high life before rewinding and showing us the gruesome underbelly. It's a bold gimmick that undermines the emotional momentum but forces us to examine our own perceptions. And it helps that the filmmakers recreate the period without much fussiness. Yes, there's a lot of big hair and groovy music, but it's never played for laughs. Everything centres on the characters, who are sharply well-played. Seyfried brings a terrific fragility to Linda, while Sarsgaard reveals Chuck's darkness in a complex way. The unrecognisable Stone is also excellent, while Patrick has the film's most moving moment.

Seyfried And Stone Are Red Carpet Stunners At 'Lovelace' LA Premiere [Photos]

Continuing its premiere streak in the US, 'Lovelace' arrived in Los Angeles last night (August 5th 2013) with lead star Amanda Seyfried turning heads yet again on the red carpet.

The actress, who plays troubled porn star Linda Lovelace in the movie about her life, left the rouge lippie that she wore for both the Las Vegas and New York premieres at home this time, instead opting for statement smoky eyes and scooping her hair up rather than letting her long locks hang loose in her trademark over-one-shoulder style. The ageless Sharon Stone also impressed on the red carpet, donning a sophisticated black trouser suit, while Juno Temple teamed her suit with bright yellow heels and a T-shirt featuring a cheeky Lovelace-related slogan. A very serious-looking Chris Noth, who stars as Anthony Romano in the movie, also appeared at the event, alongside his fedora-wearing co-star Adam Brody.

Julianna Margulies On How Weiner's Weiner Breathed Life Into 'The Good Wife'

Julianna Margulies Anthony Weiner Chris Noth

Julianna Margulies is appreciative of Anthony Weiner's sexual tweets, in a way. The actress says the New York City mayoral hopeful has given an unexpected new relevance to CBS' drama 'The Good Wife,' which revolves around a wife and mother who assumes full responsibility for her family after her husband's very public sex scandal. Sounds familiar, right?

"I feel guilty that it's the gift that keeps on giving," said Margulies at the TCA press tour this week, "We're going into our fifth year, and it feels like something new." Thanks Weiner!

On a serious note, the actress picked out painful parallels between her fictional character Alicia Florrick and Weiner's wife Huma Abedin, who awkwardly stood by her husband after his Twitter scandal went public.

Though the movie is set in the nostalgic era of sideburns, flower dresses, flares and sexual exploration, 'Lovelace' is a grimy film about the 'Deep Throat' star who became a battered, broken woman at the hands of a monster of a man.
