R 'n' B singer Chris Brown left girlfriend Rihanna bloodied and bruised after an alleged violent attack on Sunday, a source has said.
Brown, 19, was released on a $50,000 (£34,000) bail at the weekend, having been questioned over an alleged assault.
The Forever star is set to appear in court on March 5th on a charge of making criminal threats but more details have emerged about the altercation between Brown and an unidentified woman, thought to be Rihanna.
"Chris knocked her around," a source reportedly close to the couple was quoted by People as saying.
"Black eye, blood, bruises. She had to be treated by a doctor."
In reference to police photos purportedly of the Umbrella star, the source added: "She looked distraught and in a lot of pain. Her eyes were closed because she was looking down."
Rihanna, 20, has cancelled a concert this Friday in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, while Brown's contract with chewing gum firm Wrigley has been suspended.
He will also no longer appear at the NBA's All-Star Game events this weekend and could face more charges, according to legal experts.
"Prosecutors back off somewhat when they see a couple trying to work out their own issues," Steve Sitkoff, a Los Angeles defence attorney, told People.
It is believed witnesses of the altercation called the emergency services after hearing Rihanna screaming during an incident in Brown's car.
Police officers at the scene said that the Barbadian singer sustained trauma to her face and body, including contusions, swelling, bruising and a bloodied nose.
The celebrity website also reported the Umbrella singer had visible bite marks on her arms and fingers.
