Chk Chk Chk (AKA !!!; formed 1996)
Chk Chk Chk is an American rock band whose line-up features Nic Offer, Allan Wilson, Mario Andreoni, Dan Gorman, Paul Quattrone and Rafael Cohen.
Formation: Chk Chk Chk began in Sacramento, California after Black Liquorice and Popesmashers toured together with The Yah Mos joining them later. They named themselves after the unusual subtitles on the film 'The Gods Must Be Crazy', in which a language featuring a clicking noise was represented as '!!!'.
Musical career: Chk Chk Chk released their self-titled debut album in 2000 through Gold Standard Laboratories. In 2003, they released single 'Me and Giuliani Down By the School Yard' from their next album 'Louden Up Now' which came out the following year. In 2005, they released the 'Take Ecstasy with Me/Get Up' EP, and it was that year that former drummer Mikel Gius was killed in a road accident. In 2007, they released third album 'Myth Takes'. Previous singer John Pugh departed that year and was briefly replaced by Shannon Funchess. 2010 saw the release of next album 'Strange Weather, Isn't It?', featuring the single 'AM/FM', and three years later they unveiled 'THR!!!ER' which included singles 'Slyd' and 'One Girl/One Boy'.
In my younger and more vulnerable years a hippie gave me some advice that I've been turning over in my mind ever since.
"Whenever you feel you need the toilet at a festival," he told me, "just remember that the ones inside the arena get cleaned right after 11:30 so try your best to bake it until then."
And thus begins my memory of festivals: endless fields strewn with discarded baggies and cardboard cups. Herds of pink-coiffed punks and dreadlocked crusties impaled with a thousand miniature stainless steel objects, all bogling together outside a legal highs tent shaking in the wind. My own innumerable psychological breakdowns inside hot portaloos of a harrowing state, the image of which has been indelibly tattooed onto my consciousness. All this to the backdrop of countless bands whom I have varied recollection of actually seeing. In this way, just as remembrance and the fiction consumed amalgamates into one shapeless blob, so do the festivals of my youth all fuse into one long, undying gestalt festival in my mind.
