Cher's mother is under 24-hour nursing care after a bout with deadly pneumonia - but her superstar daughter was prevented from visiting her while she was in hospital.

GEORGIA HOLT, 76, was rushed to EISENHOWER MEDICAL CENTER in Rancho Mirage, California, on 12 May (03) and stayed for four more days, but the BELIEVE singer wasn't by her side.

A pal says, "Cher's sister GEORGANNE rushed to be with her mother at the hospital. But there was no sign of Cher."

But the 57-year-old singer and actress did call, says another friend, who adds, "Georgia was so sick that Cher's call was the only one doctors would allow through her room."

Luckily, Cher's mother pulled through, but pals tell American tabloid the STAR she's still a long way from regaining her full fitness.

And Cher has yet to visit her mother, but her spokeswoman Liz Rosenberg defends, "Cher was advised not to visit her mother because she was suffering from a throat infection. Doctors told her it was not a good idea to travel."

Cher's throat infection has so far caused her to cancel three shows on her farewell tour.
