Pop veteran Cher kicked off her hotly anticipated glitzy auction yesterday (03OCT06), selling off hundreds of personal items for charity. The I GOT YOU BABE star's two-day sale is taking place at a Beverly Hills hotel with the help of auction giant Sotheby's and Julien's Auctions, and attracted 200 fans eager to bid. The auctioneer drew laughs as he subtly made amusing remarks about the flashy items, describing a 1970s yellow plastic portable record player as "a thing of beauty". It sold for $1,400 (GBP777). A series of stunning Bob MACkie gowns sold for more than their $6,000 (GBP3,333) estimates. The two-day sale is expected to bring in more than $1 million (GBP500,000), a percentage of which will go to The Cher Charitable Foundation, and the rest of which will go towards revamping her Malibu mansion.
