Veteran actress Cher has been praised by a top doctor for passionately fighting to save a Scottish hospital ward from closure.

The MERMAIDS star donated $24,202 (GBP13,500) to launch a fighting fund to prevent Glasgow Homeopathic in-patients being axed as part of proposed financial cuts.

Consultant physician DR DAVID REILLY says, "This money is fantastic because it will help aid the professional advisers and volunteers who've been working so tirelessly to keep the unit open.

"But the biggest donation that Cher has made is her very public support"

In 1987, homeopathic medicine saved the pop icon's life after she was struck down by a serious viral illness - so as soon as she saw a TV report about Scotland's Homeopathic Unit she immediately pledged her support.
