Oscar-winner Charlize Theron received the Spirit Of Independence award at the Los Angeles Film Festival yesterday (29JUN06). The prize was inaugurated last year (05) to honour "individuals for his or her commitment to artistic independence in film" - and George Clooney is the only previous winner. The actress has been praised for tackling controversial roles, such as playing serial killer AILEEN WUORNOS in 2003 film MONSTER, in independent films. Theron says, "I think the biggest misconception about independent film-making is that if you do those movies you'll always be thought of as that kind of actor. "It's not true. If anything, I hope to have that kind of career, where you can go back and forth and do different things." Her next role will see her play a heroin-addicted single mother in THE ICE AT THE BOTTOM OF THE WORLD.
