Hemsworth's other big blockbuster, The Avengers, in which he plays ancient god Thor, grossed another $19.8 million (£12.38 million) to place third.
The Marvel superhero film has now taken $1.3 billion at the global box office since its release at the end of April (12), making it the third biggest movie of all time.
The Avengers replaces Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 in the coveted countdown and now only sits behind James Cameron's Titanic ($2.1 billion) and Avatar ($2.7 billion).
