Ted clearly had the right stuff(ing) over the weekend as it debuted well above predictions with an estimated $54.1 million. Box office pundits had expected an opening of around $30-35 million. Also coming in substantially above forecasts was the R-rated male-stripper flick Magic Mike , which took in around $39.1 million. Most analysts had figured it to earn about $20-25 million, and the studio itself, Warner Bros., had predicted an opening of only around $15 million. It said that 73 percent of the movie's ticket buyers were women. Nearly all observers thought that Disney/Pixar's Brave had a shot at remaining at the top spot. As it was, it earned around $34 million, coming in right on target so far as earnings were concerned but placing third. It has grossed $133 million in 10 days. The fourth spot went to Lionsgate's Tyler Perry's Madea's Witness Protection , which also bowed solidly with $26.3 million. On the other hand, DreamWorks's People Like Us , which was expected to flop with around $5 million, flopped even worse, with only $4.3 million, putting it just $100,000 above the ninth week of The Avengers , which piled up another $4.2 million to bring its domestic gross to $606.2 million. Meanwhile, film-festival award winner Beasts of the Southern Wild opened in four theaters in New York and Los Angeles with a stunning $169,000 ($42,250 per theater).
