Daredevil has a new face - and that face is unusually English.
Meet your new Daredevil – Charlie Cox. The Boardwalk Empire has been hired by Marvel/Netflix to portray Matt Murdoch, the blind lawyer from Hell’s Kitchen and his horned alter ego, according to the LA Times. So we can all move past the Ben Affleck incident already.
So can Cox pull it off?
Murdoch’s other most memorable role was in the Neil Gaiman adaptation Stardust, but the 31-year-old actor is otherwise new to the fantasy genre and certainly new to the Marvel universe. The entertainment powerhouse is currently expanding its media presence even further with four upcoming Netflix series, including ones centered around Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, Luke Cage and of course, Daredevil.
13 episodes, and will culminate with a special “The Defenders” miniseries event that reimagines a dream team of self-sacrificing, heroic characters. It’s a familiar formula, but it has worked remarkably well for Marvel so far.
Cox meanwhile, couldn’t be farther from the embattled New Yorker he’s about to play. He was born in London and raised in West Sussex, where he attended two independent schools before turning to joining the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School in Bristol.
In 2007 and 2008, it looked like his movie career was about to take off with Stardust and the British-Canadian comedy Stone of Destiny, released the following year. Soon after, however, Cox returned to his original passion, acting in Harold Pinter’s The Lover and the Collection at the Comedy Theatre in London. He has even appeared on Downton Abbey (which, given the size of the cast, isn’t really a surprise) as the Duke of Crowborough in the very first episode.
He also appeared in Kleist's The Prince of Homburg, playing the title role, at the Donmar Warehouse.
Donning the red leather outfit and an East Coast accent to match might be a challenge for Cox, but it is the kind of role that could potentially make or break a career. Then again, it did nothing for Ben Affleck, so the question is, how will Cox be any different?
