The visually stunning flick is only equalled by its ensemble cast, the voices of Channing Tatum, Zoe Saldana, Diego Luna, Christina Applegate and Ice Cube, plus many more, make these wacky characters come alive (even though they are technically dead).

'The Book of Life' follows three young friends who are caught up in a love triangle. The hunky heartthrob, Joaquin (Tatum), and a bullfighter inspiring to become a musician, Manolo (Luna), are trying to win the heart of Maria (Saldana).

However this just isn't your average rom-com, the gods of the dead make a wager on who Maria will eventually choose, but when she is close to tying the knot with Manolo, one of immortal beings poisons him to secure victory.

The musician wakes in The Land of the Remembered (a place where people who have lived fulfilling lives go to die), but determined to still be by Maria's side, he travels through the abyss, which includes the Land of the Forgotten (where the dead who hadn't fulfilled their dreams go, to fight his way back to life).

Diego Luna

The plot is inspired by and occurs during the Mexican cultural tradition of the 'Day of the Dead,' and the film's release, October 17th, will be just around the time of the national holiday.

Will this bizarre take on death, presenting it as a cheerful and positive concept, be a hit with moviegoers?
