Channing Tatum has signed up to star in sci-fi movie 'Ion'.

The 'Dear John' actor will play a lead role in the movie, which is due to be produced by Ridley and Tony Scott.

According to The Hollywood Reporter's Heat Vision Blog, the sci-fi romance movie was suggested to studios last year, but only since the strong showing of 'Avatar' and 'Star Trek' has interest been generated.

Fox 2000 is currently the lead studio to pick up the movie, which has been written by British screenwriter Will Dunn.

Movie executives are hoping 'Ion' will feature the same scope and extra-terrestrial activities as James Cameron's 'Avatar' - which has so far generated $2.7 billion worldwide.

As well as starring in the film, Channing will also debut his talents as a producer alongside business partner Reid Carolin.

Since his breakthrough role in 'Dear John', Channing has lined up a number of movie projects, including 'The Vow' alongside Rachel McAdams and 'Cheaters' with Winona Ryder and Vince Vaughn.
