The BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards were dished out at the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff, and former Catatonia frontwoman Matthews took to the stage to offer a tribute to late music historian Dr Meredydd Evans, who died in February (15) just a day after he was announced as the winner of the Good Tradition Award.

Garvey also took to the stage to honour another late star, singer/songwriter Ewan MACColl who was inducted into the Folk Awards Hall of Fame. The Elbow star performed a rendition of MACColl's classic track The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face, while other performers included Yusuf Islam and Loudon Wainwright III, who both landed lifetime achievement awards at the ceremony.

The winners also included Nancy Kerr, who was named Folk singer of the year, and 9Bach, who won Best Album for their record Tincian.
