There was a time when consumer groups regularly warned that as cable continued to grow it might eventually grab many of the events that people were able to watch free via over-the-air broadcasts. Now those warnings appear old-fashioned as more than 90 percent of households are connected to cable or satellite service providers. Indeed, hardly a word of complaint arose on Thursday as the news broke that the United States Open tennis tournament would move from CBS, its television home for 44 years, to ESPN in 2015. ESPN said that it will pay $825 million over 11 years for the rights to televise every match live on ESPN, ESPN2 or ESPN3, its online network. In an interview with today's (Friday) New York Times, ESPN President John Skipper said, We feel that sports rights are the most valuable commodity in media. The difference between broadcast and cable is inconsequential.
