I Am A Sex Addict Review

Excellent
Caveh Zahedi is a long-time avant-garde filmmaker working on the fringes of the independent scene. I haven't seen much of his work aside from an inspired segment of the 9/11 documentary Underground Zero, but most of his work seems to be about himself while not being outright documentaries.

Despite its title, I Am a Sex Addict is not exactly a documentary either, but it's close. It's unapologetically a movie by Zahedi about Zahedi. At age 45, Zahedi is a neurotic on par with Woody Allen and Spalding Gray. Clearly obsessed with himself, Zahedi is a classic hedonist, a child of the '60s that wants nothing more from life than everything he can possibly grab. And yet he feels a bit guilty about it, particularly when we learn that what really gets him going is prostitutes, a subject with which he's quickly become obsessed.

Treasure Island (1999) Review

Excellent
It's very refreshing, in today's overexposed and anti-climatic realm of moviemaking, that art still can exist in a medium such as film. It is very refreshing to know that there are still individuals on the fringes, trying their damnedest to re-invent the wheel of cinema. Treasure Island is one of those successful ventures of creating an art film for the sake of taking everything learned about filmmaking, piling it up, and lighting the whole mess on fire.

The story takes place during the second World War in San Francisco. Two intelligence officers are assigned to the duty of creating a false life for a dead man - including family letters, tickets to shows, and love letters from kindred souls - and planting him in Japanese territory to confuse the Japanese military of pending Allied military operations. Naturally, the two officers infuse their own personal letters, hatreds, and family situations into the creation of the life of the dead man. The only problem is that these two officers are the two most messed-up individuals I have seen since Hopper in Blue Velvet.

Underground Zero Review

Good
A number of indie filmmakers "Respond to 9/11" in Underground Zero, a somewhat interesting yet largely predictable examination of patriotism, race, and both pro-war and anti-war sentiment in the wake of September 11. And of course, there are plenty of total non-sequiturs to divert the film into no man's land.

The thirteen short films compiled here range from one to ten minutes in length, and the quality is completely scattershot.

Without giving away any spoilers, both the British actors hinted that season seven of 'Game of Thrones' would be eventful, shall we say.
