Vampyr Review


Excellent
In the annals of vampire cinema, the classic Nosferatu is often the first and last word on the subject. It began with F.W. Murnau's landmark work, and that's that.

But 10 years later, cinematic master Carl Theodor Dreyer made another influential film, Vampyr, and though it may not have the geek cred that Nosferatu does, it's still worth seeking out if you want to see horror's origins.

Medea Review


Weak
Weird, to say the least, Lars von Trier's 75-minute Medea is a retelling of the tragic myth of Jason (of the Argonauts fame) and his sorceress girlfriend Medea. The cryptic tale is an exercise in long takes and roundabout dialogue, where every character speaks in riddles. Don't expect to learn much about Greek mythology, though some of the imagery in the film is quite haunting.

The Passion Of Joan Of Arc Review


Excellent
A silent classic, Carl Dreyer was using modern cinema tricks decades before his contemporaries. The tale of the trial and burning at the stage of Joan of Arc in 1400s Inquisition-era France, the highlights here are Maria Falconetti's anguished portrayal of the saint, a thankless role that earned her no acclaim at the time. But Falconetti burns (no pun intended) as the tortured young woman -- if only the rest of the movie could keep up with her and the cinematography.
