Police Considering Claims Britney Spears Was Drugged

By on 28 February 2008

Britney Spears Captain Doctor Who Kevin Federline

Los Angeles police have confirmed they are addressing allegations that Britney Spears may have been drugged.

The singer's mother Lynne claimed in recent court papers that Britney's manager and confidante Sam Lufti had been medicating her, as well as restricting her access to phones and verbally abusing her.

And after court officials managed to serve a restraining order to Lufti - who had been in hiding since Britney's hospitalisation in January - Los Angeles police said the allegations of drugging are "being considered".

Police Captain Kyle Jackson added that a formal investigation has not yet been launched and no formal suspects have been identified.

Britney's mother Lynne submitted a six-page declaration to the Los Angeles superior court earlier this month to request that 33-year-old Lufti be restrained from contacting Britney in any way as he has "inserted himself into my daughter's home, life and finances".

"Sam told [friend] Jackie and me that he grinds up Britney's pills, which were on the counter and included Risperdol and Seroquel," Lynne writes in the court papers.

Risperdal is a sleeping pill, while Seroquel is used to treat bipolar disorder.

"He told us that he puts them in her food and that was the reason she had been quiet for the last three days," Lynne continues. "She had been sleeping. He told us that the Doctor Who is treating her now is trying to get her into a sleep-induced coma so that they could give her drugs to heal her brain."

Britney, 26, was admitted to the UCLA medical centre under observation for what was believed to be severe bipolar disorder, with her original 72-hour admission extended to a 14-day stay, though she was later released.

While the Toxic star's father James still holds temporary conservatorship of his daughter's estate, she has recently been permitted to see her two sons for the first time in more than a month after reaching an agreement regarding visitation rights with her ex-husband Kevin Federline.

Star Trek Movie Release Pushed Back To 2009 By Paramount

By on 14 February 2008

Star Trek Ben Stiller Captain Chris Pine David Fincher Eddie Murphy Fox John Cho Leonard Nimoy Paramount Studios Renee Zellweger Simon Pegg The Da Vinci Code Wolverine Zachary Quinto

The release date of the 11th Star Trek movie has been pushed back to May 2009 by Paramount Studios as part of a major reshuffle.

The JJ Abrams film - set to detail the exploits of Captain Kirk and co while at Starfleet Academy - had been set for a December 25th 2008 release but has been rescheduled as studios react to the end of the writers' strike.

Star Trek will now be released on May 8th 2009, with Paramount confident it can achieve greater box office dominance with an early summer opening, according to Variety.

The teaser trailer for Star Trek screened before the hugely successful Cloverfield, with an iconic voiceover from Mr Spock himself, Leonard Nimoy, has created a significant buzz among fans who had questioned the movie's casting choices.

While the signing of Simon Pegg, John Cho and Heroes star Zachary Quinto as the young Scotty, Sulu and Spock were met enthusiastically by Trekkies, many questioned the casting of the largely unknown Chris Pine as a youthful James T Kirk.

Though no other major releases are as yet planned for the May 8th weekend, the announcement from Paramount makes May 2009 a mouthwatering prospect for movie fans, with 20 Century Fox's X Men Origins: Wolverine set to open on May 1st, while Angels and Demons, Sony's sequel to The Da Vinci Code, has a May 15th debut.

Dreamworks, a Paramount affiliate, has also announced a rescheduling of one its tentpole releases, with Ben Stiller comedy Tropic Thunder pushed back from July 11th to August 15th.

Other rescheduled movies include David Fincher's The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (back to December 19th 2008), Renee Zellweger horror Case 39 (pushed from August 2008 to April 2009) and Eddie Murphy family film Nowhereland (September 2008 to June 2009).

Nicholas Cage Issues Libel Law Suit Against Kathleen Turner

By on 12 February 2008

Kathleen Turner Captain Francis Ford Coppola Gossip

NICHOLAS CAGE is suing Kathleen Turner over allegations made against him in the actress's autobiography.

A spokesperson for the actor confirmed that libel proceedings have been issued against his former co-star at the High Court in London.

In SEND YOURSELF ROSES, Turner alleges that Cage caused problems during the filming of Francis Ford Coppola's PEGGY SUE GOT MARRIED in a bid to prove he had won the role on his own merit rather than because his uncle was the director.

She also claims that the actor was arrested for drink driving and had stolen a Chihuahua.

The autobiography will be released in the US and UK later this week.

Cage has previously refuted the claims, telling the New York Post Gossip column PageSix that the credibility of Turner's biography and memory is at stake.

"Fact credibility should have been exercised on (her) part," he continued.

Meanwhile, Nicholas, who can currently be seen in NATIONAL TREASURE: BOOK OF SECRETS, recently admitted that he has "grown tired" of acting.

Speaking to HollyScoop.com, the Captain CORELLI'S MANDOLIN star also expressed frustration at the lack of control he is able to exercise over his film projects.

Victoria Beckham Captain Fabio La Galaxy Nicole Kidman Tom Cruise

David and Victoria Beckham are planning on adopting a young girl from Africa, it has been claimed.

Grazia magazine has reported that the couple were drawn to the idea after David's recent trip to Sierra Leone.

The La Galaxy star spent four days in the country as part of his role as a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations.

During the trip the former England Captain helped immunise babies and witnessed a birth.

"I was close to tears. I had to step back and take a deep breath. I'm a very emotional person and I'm even more emotional now I'm a parent," he said upon his return.

According to the magazine the Beckhams have sought advice from showbiz friend Tom Cruise, who adopted a son and daughter with ex-wife Nicole Kidman.

Grazia quotes a friend of the couple as saying they had been considering the idea for a while.

A representative for the Beckhams responded: "They both have said that they admire people who go through the adoption process, their focus is raising their own three boys."

David Beckham recently missed out the chance to gain his 100th England cap, after not being picked in Fabio Capello's squad.

Wga Signs Interim Deals

By on 25 January 2008

David Letterman Captain

The striking Writers' Guild of America (WGA) has reached a deal with two more film studios as hopes grow of a close to the lengthy industrial action.

Independent film producer Lionsgate and Marvel studio have signed interim agreements with the WGA similar to those signed with United Artists, The Weinstein Company and David Letterman's Worldwide Pants organisation.

The accords will allows Lionsgate to resume production on popular shows such as Weeds and Mad Money while Marvel will be able to restart writing upcoming projects such as Captain America, Ant-Man, Thor and The Avengers, studio chairman David Maisel was quoted by Variety as saying.

In a joint statement issued by WGA West president Patric M Verrone and WGA East chief Michael Winship, the union said it was "pleased Lionsgate has joined the growing number of companies that have signed interim agreements with the Writers Guild".

It added: "Lionsgate is considered a leader in the industry and its signing an interim agreement again confirms that it is possible for writers to be compensated fairly and respectfully for their work and for companies to operate profitably."

A Lionsgate statement said the studio felt it was "an important time, particularly in view of our TV series, to have our writer partners get back to work".

"We look forward to a broad industry agreement soon."

The writers' union has been on strike since November 5th after a dispute with the Association of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) regarding royalty payments for works distributed on the internet, DVDs and mobile phones.

The recent Golden Globe awards were handed out at a press conference - after the ceremony was cancelled due to fears that actors would refuse to cross writers' picket lines - and this year's Oscars remain under threat of cancellation.

New Captain Kirk Talks

Chris Pine Captain Entertainment Weekly John Cho Karl Urban Lord Of The Rings Simon Pegg Star Trek Take That William Shatner Zachary Quinto

Chris Pine, the actor set to play Captain Kirk in the upcoming Star Trek film, has talked of the pressures of taking on the iconic role.

Smokin' Aces star Pine is to step into the shoes of William Shatner in the JJ Abrams picture which tells of the adventures of the Starship Enterprise during their time at Star Fleet academy.

Though he confirmed he would reveal "not a thing" during an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the 27-year-old did let slip some small details about the movie, set for a Boxing Day release.

"I think the biggest mistake I could ever do would be to try to recreate what Mr Shatner did," he explained. "There are certain qualities that Kirk has that are vital for someone who is a leader of men.

"And those qualities, I definitely wanted to take from what Mr Shatner did in the original series. But my job is to take something new, to Take That and build upon it, really do my own thing. I just feel no pressure when it comes to that."

The young actor admitted he can understand the fears of hardcore fans but attempt to allay some of their concerns.

"I don't have that many credits and people are very worried that their Kirk is going to be destroyed. But I can only say that we're having a great time. JJ has been wonderful and the cast is phenomenal. I think what we're doing is very special."

Pine said he had not met Shatner, but added: "I've met Mr Nimoy a couple of times. He's been on set and we have a couple of scenes in the film, which will be nice, and I'm excited for those."

Though Heroes star Zachary Quinto is to play the young Vulcan, Pine's comments could imply that time travel is featured in the movie or that flashbacks will be used.

After a call for 'odd-looking' extras, much of the movie's major casting has been completed.

British comedy favourite Simon Pegg will play the young Scotty, Lord Of The Rings actor Karl Urban stars as Leonard 'Bones' McCoy and comic actor John Cho plays Mr Sulu.

Big Brother Captain Chris Moyles The Tears

Big Brother: Celebrity Hijack housemates John Loughton and Anthony Ogogo were allowed a taste of home by hijacker Chris Moyles.

After the housemates had enjoyed a pub quiz, John, Captain of the winning team, had been invited by the Radio 1 DJ to share a pint in the secret bar.

And the young politician was rewarded for his trivia triumph by being granted a three-minute phone call to his mother.

The 20-year-old Edinburgh man called his family but was careful to save one of his allotted minutes for Anthony.

After emerging from the diary room, John told his fellow contestants he'd been given a "wee present" by Moyles.

Struggling to hold back The Tears after speaking to his mother, John then sprang another surprise on the group by revealing he had saved time for Anthony to call his mother and sister.

The boxing hopeful went into the bedroom to use the telephone, saying: "Mum, I've only got thirty seconds, how is everyone? I miss you so much, I love you."

The 19-year-old followed John's lead and burst into tears, with the chairman of the Scottish Youth Parliament then giving him a hug and telling him, "you deserved it".

Moyles also gave young musician Calista Robertson some career advice, after which she called the Leeds disc jockey "wicked".

She said Moyles had told her: "You're really talented, you could go down either the singing or the writing route."

She added: "He was really enthusiastic, and he said he wouldn't say it if he didn't mean it."
