Alvin And The Chipmunks Review

Unbearable
In theory, it's a good idea for a family film. Take Dave Seville's (aka songwriter Ross Bagdasarian Sr.) loveable novelty act, those swell, squeaky voiced woodland creatures, and marry them to the post-modern world of CGI. Toss in a recognizable name (in this case, My Name is Earl's Jason Lee) in the human role, ratchet up the current pop culture references (lots of video game nods and hip-hop rodent rump-shakin') and, hypothetically, you've got a no miss holiday treat.

So where, exactly, did the makers of the nauseating Alvin and the Chipmunks go wrong? How did something that seemed like a slam dunk turn into one of the biggest piles of 2007 junk? Maybe it's the lack of cleverness? A myriad of missed opportunities? The blatant stupidity of the entire narrative? You'd think that Jon Vitti (ex-Simpsons scribe), Will McRobb and Chris Viscardi (both of Pete and Pete fame) could come up with something fresher, more original, than this rabid rags-to-riches tale. Even worse, director Tim Hill (Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties) offers no situational context to make the otherwise surreal circumstances crackle with comic possibilities.

Open Water 2: Adrift Review

Grim
Who knew you could build a movie franchise around people just floating in the ocean?

Open Water 2: Adrift is in no way a sequel to the original Open Water, except that both feature people bobbing helplessly in the water. In the original, the sharks get them (more or less) after one couple's SCUBA charter leaves them behind. In this follow-up, six Gen-X'ers jump off a luxury yacht and into the water... but *d'oh!* no one put the ladder down, so they can't get back aboard. How will they get aboard? Well aside from the obvious (which occurs to them at the very end), they'll try everything from jumping in the water to making ropes out of bikini tops.

Supercross: The Movie Review

Terrible
The biggest problem with the Internet Movie Database is that whatever person reviews a film first gets his review displayed first on the site. Take a look at some of your favorite films and you're bound to be confronted with a review by some shmuck who thinks the picture stinks. His review is littered with spelling errors and consists of things like "movie sucked cause no one got blowed up," but there it is for the entire world to see.

If you look up Supercross you'll get a review that says the movie is great, in fact it's the "best movie [the reviewer] has ever seen" for numerous reasons including, "Steve Howie [sic]... is so hot."

Dorm Daze Review

Terrible
National Lampoon used to be a name associated with juvenile yet genuinely funny comedies like Animal House and Vacation. But don't stop reading just yet: National Lampoon is actually still around!

Sadly, today's Lampoon is pretty much a factory for terrible teen sex comedies, few of which I daresay you'll have heard of. They have names like Senior Trip, Repli-Kate, and Golf Punks. In recent years only Van Wilder has merited a theatrical release.
