Easy A Review

Very Good
Smarter than your average teen comedy, this snappy movie knows how to keeps us laughing. But while the plot touches on some truths about teen sexuality, it feels constrained by the genre to be rather moralising about it.

To clear up confusion, 17-year-old Olive (Stone) is doing a live webcast outlining the chain of events that began when she inadvertently started a rumour that she'd lost her virginity. After letting the gossip grow, she's now known as the school slut; in the process she loses her best pal (Michalka) and wages war on the class goody-goody (Bynes). Her parents (Clarkson and Tucci) know the truth, as does her favourite teacher (Church), although the hearsay is about to upset his marriage to the school's guidance counsellor (Kudrow).

Pandorum Review

Bad
An appalling script is only one problem with this loud, chaotic sci-fi thriller. It's also directed in such a deliberately confusing way that it's not only impossible to follow the action, but it's impossible to care about the characters.

In the spidery space vessel Elysium, which left Earth in 2174, Bower (Foster) awakens from hiber-sleep with no memory of who he is. The ship's in trouble, and when Lt Payton (Quaid) wakes up, he doesn't remember anything either. So Bower heads into the darkened ship to try to reboot the power supply. But he soon encounters viciously murderous creatures, as well as a few lost and desperate crewmen (Traue and Le). Meanwhile, Payton finds the mercurial Gallo (Gigandet), who seems to know more than admits.

The Unborn Review

Terrible
In a world bereft of rationality, such as that of popular Hollywood, Odette Yustman could play the slightly-younger sister (or, heck, even twin) of somebody like Jessica Alba, and it's fitting that their careers seem to be synching up. Almost a year to the day after Alba started seeing ghosts from a pair of haunted peepers in The Eye, Yustman begins seeing ghosts because -- well, gosh, I don't know why -- in David S. Goyer's sophomore effort as writer/director, The Unborn.

Yustman plays Casey Beldon, a college student who suddenly begins seeing scorpions in her eggs, dogs with masks, and all sorts of other crazy things. Her doctor gives her the boring reason: genetic mosaicism, a retinal irregularity usually seen in twins. It takes her Holocaust-survivor grandmother (Jane Alexander) to root out the real, much more evil reason, and, as per usual, the Nazis are involved. The reason that creepy blue-eyed zombie child keeps following her around has something to do with experiments done on Casey's great uncle in Auschwitz that naturally turned him into a mythical Jewish demon named Dybbuk. And it's up to Gary Oldman, as a Rabbi, to exorcize the malicious bugger.

Twilight Review

Bad
Damn you Anne Rice! Even since you introduced that lovelorn supermodel turned bloodsucker Lestat, the vampire has been romanticized all out of proportion. Cold yet compassionate, sexy but spurned, the supposed supernatural monster has gone from corpse to Casanova in the twinkle of a dateless spinster's eye. Now comes Twilight, the latest entry in the continued compromising of the classic Stoker archetype. Aimed directly at the ADD-addled attention span of the average Facebooker, aside from being no fun at all, it stands as one of 2008's most crass commercial statements.

When her mother's new hubby wants to pursue his dreams of playing minor league baseball, Isabella "Bella" Swan (Kristen Stewart) is sent off to live with her sheriff father (Billy Burke) in the sleepy, somewhat creepy Pacific Northwest town of Fork. There she becomes an instant hit at the local high school, and captures the piercing gaze of campus pretty boy Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson). The foster son of the town's enigmatic doctor, he and his surprisingly similar-looking siblings are noted for being very secretive and semi-outcasts.
