Pop band Busted's contribution to the ill-fated Thunderbirds movie has been crowned Britain's best song of 2004 by the record-buying public.

The group's hit - appropriately titled THUNDERBIRDS - beat out competition from their pop pals McFly's song FIVE COLOURS IN HER HAIR, comeback star Anastacia's LEFT OUTSIDE ALONE and singer Will Young's LEAVE RIGHT NOW at the Record of the Year event in London last night (04NOV04).

Sexy Katie Melua's ballad CLOSEST THING TO CRAZY completed the top five.

Against expectations, the two best selling singles of the year - Eamon's F**K IT (I DON'T WANT YOU BACK) and Band Aid 20's modern version of charity song DO THEY KNOW IT'S CHRISTMAS? - failed to make the shortlist.

Also competing for the prestigious prize were MAROON 5, Scissor Sisters, Girls Aloud, Natasha Bedingfield and Brian McFadden.
