Bruno Mars paid tribute to soul singer Amy Winehouse last night (28.08.2011) by performing hit single 'Valerie' at the 2011 MTV VMA awards.

The 'Just the Way You Are' singer appeared on stage wearing a sequin blue suit and black tie, shuffling from side-to-side he sang the words "Say Amy, oh Amy/ I love you darling, I love you darling/ Say Amy, whoa Amy, we'll miss you baby" according to Mtv.com, he was also accompanied by a three piece horn and string section as well as Amy Winehouse being written across the band's drum. Adele could also be seen singing along in the crowd as the bouncy number was performed. Comedian Russell Brand was another celebrity that also used the event to remember the 'Back to Black' singer and told of his sadness at the loss of such a talented artist after her struggle with addiction. "First time I met her, she was kind of like a daft, dopey person, just wandering around a little bit crazy." Adding that her voice was a "timeless sound, like a roar from the guts of humanity. The kind of voice that Billie Holiday sung with, the kind of voice that Ella Fitzgerald sung with."

Bruno Mars also had a large pop-art style picture of the English singer placed above the band as they performed. The Hawaiian born singer released his debut album Doo-Wops & Hooligans last year and has gone on to achieve notable chart success.
