Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best Of Both Worlds Concert Tour Review

Excellent
Disney sensation Miley Cyrus sheds another layer of her tween dynamic as she edges closer to the adult she'll be before we know it. In this full out concert, directed by Bruce Hendricks, her sprightly energy, dancing and original music just takes over the place as she commands full engagement with her adoring fans. If you're going to be a rock star you've got to act like one and Cyrus does it like she's born to. Her great time is your great time -- if you're into it. And, to get things off on the right footing, she opens with her powerhouse, "Rock Star."

With poise and personality, she shows a veteran's savvy: addressing her performance to all corners of the auditorium, neatly acknowledging things being proffered by her adorers on lively journeys around the stage, displaying the endurance of someone whose done this kind of workout before, while charming the house and delivering the goods.

Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest Review

Excellent

It has become critical cliché to say that a gleefully executed summer blockbuster made one feel like a kid again, but this was my precise response to Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest. With its sun-bleached locales, barnacled bad guys, and unearthly soothsayers, director Gore Verbinski's latest pirate yarn is a stunning affront to marital woes, career anxieties, tax returns, and all other forms of mature and adult tosh. Silly and infectiously joyous from overwrought beginning to overwrought final frame, Pirates is not only fathoms in front of its predecessor, but sails far ahead of every other big-budget pop confectionary to have flavored theatres so far this year.

First, a moment of pause to contextualize this gushing praise. I was no great fan of Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. It was no doubt a solid film: great Johnny Depp performance, breezy and colorful, but far too frequently tedious to warrant the lauding it received. I was not particularly looking forward to a sequel, seeing dollar signs in Verbinski's eyes rather than the reflection of some artistic muse. What surprises most then about this latest Pirates is its absolute regard for its art and its audience. The film gives fans what they want: more pop, less plod and most importantly, more Captain Jack.

Ultimate X Review

Good
At times, documentaries walk a fine line between history and commercialism. ESPN's testosterone-filled IMAX film Ultimate X jumps over that line with its exposé of the Super Bowl of extreme sports - the X Games. The film is complete with ultra-slick, glossy cinematography, clever interviews with the crazed but revered heroes of extreme sports, and the ever-ready hot soundtrack filled with pulsing, radio-friendly bands that only your kids know the names of.

The film captures a whole smorgasbord of footage including events like Moto X, Street Luge, Freestyle Skateboarding, and Stunt BMX. Using large-format cameras, the film captures the awe-inspiring antics of these adrenaline junkies living out the golden dreams of youth in full IMAX amazement. Special P.O.V. camera mounts on bikes, skateboards, and motorcycles provide an intense experience when splashed across the immense IMAX screen. The exquisite calm of a street luge race is particularly memorable.
