Britney Spears is to become only the third ever recipient of Billboard’s prestigious Millennium Award, at this year’s ceremony in Las Vegas on May 22nd. The ‘Toxic’ singer follows in the footsteps of Beyonce, who received the award in 2011 and Whitney Houston, who was honoured posthumously in 2012.

The special award is meant to honour an artist with outstanding career achievements whose career has made a tremendous influence in the music industry. At the ceremony later this month Spears will also perform medley of her greatest hits.

Spears has previously won six Billboard Music Awards in the past, New Artist of the Year (1999), Female Artist of the Year (1999), Female Albums Artist of the Year (1999), Female Singles Artist of the Year (1999), Albums Artist of the Year (2000) and Hot Dance Sales Single of the Year (2004).

In 2000, she was also given a special award for the largest first week sales ever for a female artist, for album ...Baby One More Time. On the Billboard chart, six of Spears’ albums have debuted at the number one spot, since her first release in 1999.

Spears is currently still enjoying her residency at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, as well as working on her ninth studio album. Speaking about the album back in March, Spears teased: "I'm proud of the work. it’s very different.”

“It's not what you would think at all. But I'm not rushing anything. I just want it to be done right, so that my fans will truly appreciate it.” The record will be Spears’ first since Britney Jean, which was released back in December 2013.
