Bride Of Re-Animator Review

OK
It says "H.P. Lovecraft's" above the title, but rest assured, the grand master of the weird tale never wrote a book by the name of Bride of Re-Animator.

This update/retelling of the Frankenstein story is every bit as cheesy as the original tale, but much of the geeky humor that made the original Re-Animator such a classic is sorely lacking here. The film is just a continuation of the story of Herbert West (Jeffrey Combs) as he works on his green serum that can reanimate dead tissue. Naturally, as the body count rises, it shrinks in lockstep.

Darkness Review

Bad
I love road trips. Not because I'm especially fond of sitting in my car for days at a time, but because with each passing mile a promise is fulfilled. Every hour behind the wheel draws you nearer to your destination, and along the way you can sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride. But, though paperback self-help writers may tell you otherwise, the journey itself is not enough. You have to actually get somewhere to make the whole trip worthwhile. And if, at the end of a day's travel, you haven't gone anywhere at all, you've wasted all your time and a whole lot of gas.

Like a long road trip to nowhere, Spanish director Jaume Balagueró's Darkness is miserable, frustrating, and hard on the buttocks. Though the film's run time is a mere 102 minutes, the psychological impact of wasting precious money and energy staring at the screen and waiting for something -- anything -- to happen could take years off your life.

Re-Animator Review

Excellent
The heady and fabulously gruesome works of H.P. Lovecraft have lent the plotlines to more than 20 movies, and most of these films are unbearable direct-to-video shlock.

But 1985's cult classic Re-Animator launched this return to Lovecraft's work, and if later filmmakers had learned anything from Stuart Gordon and Brian Yuzna's horror masterpiece, they would have assured old H.P. a much stronger legacy.

Dagon Review

Weak
Reuniting Re-Animator director Stuart Gordon and producer Brian Yuzna, Dagon unfortunately proves that no amount of nudity can redeem a zombie-fish-creature movie

That's right, it's zombie-fish-creatures as a boatload of four tourists visit a coastal Spanish town and soon find themselves on the run from the aforementioned beasts -- disciples, as it turns out, of the ancient sea creature Dagon.

Beyond Re-Animator Review

Weak
The third Re-Animator film (18 years after the original!) finds Herbert West in prison but still finding time to work on his Frankensteinian experiments in a corner of his cell. He's getting a little better at it, too, perfecting his green serum. Alas, when an inmate dies of a heart attack, re-animation turns him into a crazed zombie. A comely reporter on the scene fares a bit better, but when riots break out in the prison (zombies and non-zombies alike), all hell breaks loose. Minimal creature effects make this by far the least interesting of the series, including the lackluster Bride of Re-Animator. But come 2015, I'll be curious to see if Herbert has finally mastered his formula. I figure be then he'll be retired and a billionaire, having conquered death. Now that's a movie!
