The Forsaken Review

Weak
Reworking an old genre is one evil beast of burden. It takes a skilled scriptwriter and a clever director to make a tired genre plausible once again. Alas, both the writer and the director fail miserably with the forgettable vampire farce The Forsaken -- an annoying one-two-three punch of crappy acting, shoddy scriptwriting, and poor direction.

Sean (Kerr Smith), a struggling film editor for a B-movie studio, heads out onto the road from LA to deliver a vintage Mercedes and attend his sister's wedding in Florida. Along the way, he picks up Nick (Brendan Fehr), a hitchhiker with a lame beard who sweats profusely and holds a hidden agenda. During a rest stop, Sean and Nick pick up a dazed girl named Megan (Izabella Miko), an apparent vampire victim who was left for dead by a nightcrawler gang roaming the countryside.

Childstar Review

Good
In this smart but inconsistent look at the concept of celebrity, Canadian indie favorite Don McKellar pulls triple-duty -- writing, directing, and starring -- for the first time in seven years. That year, 1998, McKellar caught the eye of the international film audience with his end-of-the-world diary Last Night, and the ambitious epic The Red Violin, which he co-wrote. In comparison to those fine contributions, Childstar is lightweight stuff and sub-par McKellar.

Having conceived the idea for Childstar after a chance Oscar party conversation with Haley Joel Osment, McKellar stars as Rick, an experimental filmmaker who becomes the limo driver for Taylor Brandon Burns (great name!) a spoiled 12-year-old American superstar (Mark Rendall) shooting a new film in Canada. That movie, The First Son, is a ridiculous piece of jingoistic drivel where the President's son kicks some terrorist ass in order to save Dad, the White House and the whole damn country.

Nemesis Game Review

Good
In the grand history of live-action-role-playing-games-gone-wrong-in-the-movies (Gotcha!, T.A.G., Subterano) comes Nemesis Game, in which players attempt to answer Hobbit-esque riddles in search of, well, in search of something that I never really figured out.

Who's behind the game, how exactly it is played, why people are playing, and even who's footing the bill for the thing are questions that will have to go ananswered. Even the most casual viewer will be inevitably frustrated and completely baffled by the inexplicable story in Nemesis Game, but I have to admit that despite a massive failing in the plot department I actually had fun watching this film.

Biker Boyz Review

Weak
Ever since I saw my first Ruff Ryders video on MTV that featured hip hop stars like DMX and Eve riding tricked-out motorcycles, I knew that a black biker trend was on its way. Then when I saw a group of black bikers hanging out on the side of the highway in North Carolina over Christmas, I knew it had arrived.

So it was really only a matter of time that a movie like Biker Boyz would be released, ripe to cash in on the fad of glammed-up, nitrous-powered high-speed bike racing. And judging from all the ads for Biker Boyz, it seemed like the motorbike fans would get just what they wanted: a Fast and the Furious on two wheels--plenty of explosions, crashes, tits, and dumb as a rock dialogue. I expected it so much that I was actually looking forward to that kind of experience with this film, but that's far from what the movie is.

Kill Me Later Review

Terrible
Just about scrapes bottom, if for no other reason than the obnoxious camerawork and editing which has every scene re-enacted rapid-fire multiple times from multiple angles, usually with pulsing music over the whole thing. The story is wholesale idiotic, too: bank robber takes suicidal bank clerk hostage; she demands her death, he refuses. Oh, the hilarity! Anyway, Mr. Lustig, this isn't a music video, pal. Get it together.

The Forsaken Review

Bad

My favorite part of every modern vampire movie is the inevitable scene in which the vampire leader (if the bloodsuckers are the protagonists) or the vampire hunter (if they're the antagonists) explains to an uninitiated character that all the popular myths about vampires are completely inaccurate.

"Here's the truth" they always say, then go on to explain the vampire rules made up to fit the plot shortcomings of that particular movie.

In "The Forsaken" -- a glossy, gory, half-heartedly hip attempt to remake "The Lost Boys" for the "Coyote Ugly" generation -- the ghouls are little more than Gap models with faded tans. They don't have fangs, they don't have any supernatural powers to speak of, and they're too lazy even to kill with a good old-fashioned bite to the jugular. They generally just shoot their prey and quaff their fill of plasma from the bullet wound. What a bunch of slackers.

Biker Boyz Review

OK

A pair of robust performances from Laurence Fishburne and Derek Luke (the Antwone Fisher of "Antwone Fisher") raise the laughably-titled motorcycle action flick "Biker Boyz" slightly above its veneer as a two-wheel rip-off of "The Fast and the Furious."

Similarly set in the "sideshow" world of illegal street racing, this movie comes minus the ridiculous cops-vs.-smugglers subplot and plus some impressive Western-inspired trick riding. In one scene two bikers speed down the freeway, dismounted to one side of their muscle-cycles with both feet in metal-soled boots, making contact with the road and sending out 20-foot sparks.

But while the plot is utterly predictable -- Kid (Luke), a hot-headed but talented up-and-coming racer, wants to challenge long-time champion Smoke (Fishburne) for his title -- the love-hate relationship between the two (Kid's dad had been Smoke's mechanic) has more depth and dimension than this kind of over-polished B-movie usually musters (see Sylvester Stallone and Kip Pardue in the formulaic, Formula One-themed "Driven").
