A Ghost Story Review

Very Good

Filmmaker David Lowery reunites the stars from his offbeat Western Ain't Them Bodies Saints for an even more offbeat drama about the afterlife. A ghost story in which the lead character is a guy under a sheet feels like it should be funny, and yet this is a resolutely arthouse movie, inventive but pretentious and high-minded. Yes, the silly imagery makes us giggle, but Lowery strikes such a somber tone that we can't help but take it seriously.

Casey Affleck and Rooney Mara reunite to play a couple whose happy life comes to an end when he is killed in a car crash. Now he wanders around their small house, watching his wife grieve, only able to communicate to another ghost who's haunting the house next door. After his wife packs up and moves on, this sheet-clad spirit sticks around, trying to communicate with a single mother (Sonia Acevedo), then a partying mob of ravers, including one guy (Will Oldham) who launches into a diatribe about the meaning of existence. But since he's dead, this ghost has only begun to experience his own journey through time and space.

Yes, as it goes along, the film spirals out into the kind of epic exploration of eternity that Terrence Malick keeps making (see The Tree of Life or To The Wonder). The central conceit of having Affleck performing under a white bedsheet is very clever, because it undercuts all preconceptions about ghost movies, offering a refreshingly earthbound approach that avoids swirly digital effects. But the fact is that, no matter how dark the film's tone is, it looks rather ridiculous. And Lowery only just barely gets away with walking this fine line between corny self-indulgence and meaningful drama.

Pitch Perfect 2 - Super Bowl TV Spot

The Barden Bellas are back after their impressive victory in a national a cappella chorus competition, where they proved the strength of girl power over some of the biggest choirs in the country. Beca, Emily, Chloe, Aubrey, Cynthia-Rose, Stacie, Lilly, Jessica and Fat Amy have got bigger fish to fry these days, as they eye up global competition ahead of the daunting international contest. They may have bags of confidence, but as no American chorus has ever managed to land the coveted prize before, it may not be enough to get them through this time. Nonetheless, it's time these girls tested their odds against the greatest collective voices on the planet, even if their new rivals are showing some seemingly matchless talent.

The Baytown Outlaws Trailer

Brick, McQueen and Lincoln Oodie are three trigger-happy redneck brothers who work for a corrupt sheriff of their town, taking down criminals in unlawful ways. After accidentally taking out the residents at an address that turns out to be wrong, they are offered $25,000 by Celeste Martin who asks them to retrieve her kidnapped handicapped godson Rob from her violent ex-husband Carlos who believes she is dead. He killed Rob's parents and had Celeste shot when he discovered he had a large sum of money in a trust that matured when he hit 18. The Oodies think of their mission as a simple smash and grab but things become less easy when Carlos sets a gang of gorgeous but deadly women on them, as well as a group of Federal agents and various other psychopaths hell bent on killing the brothers. While previously seeking fun in lawless battles to the death, the Oodie outlaws soon find themselves questioning themselves and their careers as they do everything in their power to protect the boy from harm, and not just for their own gain.

Comedy action just doesn't get any better than 'The Baytown Outlaws' and is a wonderful feature length movie debut from director Barry Battles and his co-writer Griffin Hood. It will hit theaters in January 2013 after being released On-Demand Nationwide on December 4th 2012.
