World War Z

Filming on Brad Pitt's apocalyptic zombie epic World War Z started two years ago in Britain and Malta, and audiences are finally getting to see the results this weekend. Critics are being hard on the film, but the box office will have the last word.

The Edinburgh International Film Festival kicked off this week with the premiere of Breathe In, the new drama from Drake Doremus (Like Crazy), who walked the red carpet with star Felicity Jones. There will be nearly 150 new movies screened in Edinburgh over the next 10 days, along with parties every night with the filmmakers and stars.

Meanwhile in New York, Madonna stepped out in top hat and tails for the premiere of her concert film Madonna: The MDNA Tour. But it was Sandra Bullock who caused a stir in a revealing Victoria Beckham dress at the London premiere of her action comedy The Heat.

Despicable Me 2

Out on the publicity tour for their new film Despicable Me 2, which previews in the UK this weekend, the cast has been talking to the press about their roles in the sequel. Steve Carell returns as Gru, with Miranda Cosgrove as his now-teen daughter. They're joined this time by Kristen Wiig as a Gru's spy partner and Benjamin Bratt as the shifty Eduardo. Meanwhile, Pharrell Williams provides some groovy music.

And with the summer movie season getting well underway, we have a glut of fantastic new trailers to tease us this week, including first glimpses of films that are rather a long way off.

Out next year, The Lego Movie looks surprisingly hilarious, packing the screen with big action scenes and lots of well-known Lego heroes.

300: Rise of an Empire

Also opening next year, looks like another highly stylised, over-serious Ancient Greek battle movie, with even bigger action than before. Plus even more muscle men in tiny skirts.

Coming in time for Christmas, the middle film in the trilogy, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, sends our intrepid heroes into even more spectacular adventures, apparently, including an encounter with the eponymous dragon.

Opening in time for awards season, The Wolf of Wall Street starring Leonardo DiCaprio has a new trailer that makes the film look unmissable. Another shift in tone from Martin Scorsese, it looks hilariously raucous and a bit scary too.

And finally, we had another hilarious teaser for Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues, starring Will Ferrell, Steve Carell, John C Reilly and David Koechner. This one also opens in December.
