Two of Bollywood's top stars have announced their engagement.
Often referred to as Bollywood's version of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, Abhishek Bachchan and former Miss World Aishwarya Rai's relationship has been in the forefront of the Indian press.
They were officially engaged in a private ceremony in front of family and friends yesterday following weeks of speculation and rumours that the couple had already wed.
"She said yes, and we are happy for them," said Bachchan's father, Indian actor Amitabh Bachchan, who told media that his son proposed to the Bollywood actress in New York last week.
No set date for the wedding has been announced but speculation in the media has already begun. Some newspapers have claimed that the wedding could come as early as next month.
According to reports crowds of people gathered in front of Bachchan's residence this morning. A number of Bollywood stars and Indian celebrities were expected to visit to congratulate the couple.
Rai, 33, and Bachchan, 31, have recently returned from the premiere of their latest film Guru. Speaking at the Toronto premiere, Rai, who was crowned Miss World in 1994, told media and fans that she would like to share her marriage with everyone.
"I'm a normal girl. I do believe in the institution of marriage. It'll be a joyous occasion for me and one I'd like to share with everyone," she said.
