Download Festival 2014 Review

Download Festival 2014 was a tamer affair than in previous years, largely owing to the event's tightened alcohol and drugs searches, bands being instructed not to encourage the crowds to mosh, more mainstream main stage headliners, fewer boobs being shown on the live camera feed, and the sombre tone of the renamed 'Stephen Sutton Stage'. Instead of holding a silence for the cancer-struck teen, festival attendees took part in a minute of respectful applause, which was paralleled by comedy pop punk band Bowling For Soup's tribute to the late comic, Rik Mayall.

In memoriam sections aside, the festival managed to transform what could be perceived as a weaker line-up compared to its preceding year into a three-day celebration of a broad range of the rock spectrum, filled with bespoke performance gems and quality heavy metal memories. First night closers Avenged Sevenfold brought a larger stage to Donington than they'd ever taken out of the US and combined imposing crypt-inspired adornments with an explosive set that proved on a world stage that they are worthy successors to titans Metallica and Iron Maiden.

The beady-eyed punter will have had a ball spotting the odd and hilarious happenings across the weekend, including a "face-melting" washboard solo from Berlin faux cowboys The BossHoss, punk's immature popsters Bowling For Soup asking a knight to decapitate a giant inflatable sheep, full contact medieval fighting from Battle Heritage, and Killswitch Engage's Jesse Leach inviting the crowd to "dance responsibly" to a particularly heavy breakdown. Ribs were probably broken in the latter instance.

Bowling For Soup - Interview

Interview with Bowling For Soup October 2013

The close of 2013 sees Texan quartet Bowling For Soup toasting their nineteenth year of existence on the tail of their thirteenth full-length release. If these stats don't sound impressive then consider the following; their lifespan has been roughly double that of The Beatles and their album count is higher than that of Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd or even any of their noteworthy pop-punk peers, where quantity over quality is often the approach undertaken. Whilst not being a book-end on their career, 2013's tour has been billed as a 'Farewell Tour', in which they say goodbye to their typical rigorous annual schedule of touring Europe & the US.

Before they go on-stage to a sold-out audience at Nottingham Rock City, Contactmusic sits down with founding member Erik Chandler, a very talkative, intelligent individual who seems upon meeting to be at odds with the carefree, juvenile music he and his cohorts make.

Contactmusic: So, first off, how is this current tour going?
Erik: Well we're only two nights down but so far it's fantastic. We're playing a lot longer than we normally do, I think we're clocking in at around 31-35 songs a night and that's... that's a little bit of a beating, but I've been doing well at going to bed at a decent hour and waking up at a decent hour, not burning my candle at both ends.

Bowling for Soup, Fishin' for Woos Album Review

Through my early teen years, Bowling for Soup were almost a permanent fixture on my stereo, although in recent years they fell off my radar. Fishin' for Woos is their first album after being dropped from their record deal with Jive, and they promised a more 'classic' sounding BFS record, which is exactly what they've delivered.
