U2 frontman Bono has praised hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons for getting America involved with the LIVE 8 cause.

The Irish rocker had tried to emulate SIR Bob Geldof by rousing the US into action for the worldwide effort, but he feared the nation needed an American to motivate them.

Bono tells US magazine TIME, "What Bob provides with his steel and fund raising and what RICHARD (CURTIS) provides in terms of community in the cinematic arts and as a writer with his ability to deliver a message, I feel like I've been trying to do in the US - but I'm not American.

"Really until today, when Russell Simmons called and offered to help, we haven't had the American sense of ownership that we should.

"I think it's going to turn around. But we've started very late."
