Soul star Bobby Womack has been released from hospital after receiving treatment for pneumonia, but is due to undergo an operation later this month (Mar12) as he fights cancer.
The singer's close friend William 'Bootsy' Collins revealed Womack's colon cancer battle on Sunday (25Mar12) and the news has now been confirmed by the star's representative.
Womack was hospitalised last week (ends25Mar12) after he was struck down with pneumonia, but was discharged on Sunday (25Mar12) so he can continue his recovery ahead of a planned operation to treat his cancer.
A statement posted on the star's page reads, "Because of stories circulating regarding the health of soul icon Bobby Womack, we felt it necessary to set the record straight. We're pleased to let everyone know that Bobby was released from hospital yesterday afternoon following a successful recovery from pneumonia. Bobby has cancer and is scheduled to undergo surgery later this month."
The singer has also thanked his fans for their support after his health crisis was made public, adding, "My family, friends and I are looking forward to a successful surgery and speedy recovery. I want to thank all of my fans for their prayers, love and well wishes. I look forward to seeing all of you on the road in support of my new release."
Womack's new album The Bravest Man In The Universe is due out in June (12).
