City Hall Review

Good
There's two things I dislike: politics and long, boring speeches. City Hall has plenty of both, and while Al Pacino is almost cool enough to make me think politics can be okay, it's got so many long speeches that I started looking for the remote control after the third or fourth one.

City Hall is a drama/thriller with most of the thrill sucked out of it. After a ridiculously convoluted opening, filled with the weak voice-over of the Deputy Mayor of New York City, Kevin Calhoun (John Cusack), we find ourselves embroiled in the world of Mayor John Pappas (Pacino). As the film opens, we find a cop and mobster killed in a shoot-out, taking with them the life of a six-year old boy.

Meet Joe Black Review

Very Good
So I'm sure by now you've already heard that Meet Joe Black clocks in at an unmentionable three hours or so. What is the world coming to right? Well, you can bitch and moan all you want, and talk about how the movie's box office performance is evidence that Martin Brest made a pretty big mistake, but I've got one question for you: Why not?

We go to the movies to enjoy ourselves, and who's to say that if we are having fun, it should only last for one hour and 40 minutes and then we're out of there. Do we really have so many better things to do? If I'm watching a movie I enjoy, I don't even really want it to end, just maybe give me a fifteen minute bathroom break and I'm good.

Melvin And Howard Review

Good
Much less fun than I'd remembered: Melvin and Howard is the true-ish about Melvin Dummar (Paul Le Mat), a guy who claims to have picked up a desert wanderer... who in turns claimed to have been Howard Hughes (Jason Robards). Dummar later claimed to receive a letter from Hughes, willing his fortune to him. The courts disagreed. This movie, however, isn't much about that. The bulk concerns Melvin's life in the time between the pickup and the will, namely his quest to be Milkman of the Month, and his wife's white-trash ways. More time with Hughes would have been highly preferable.

Swing Shift Review

Excellent
Do the people who write the back of video boxes and DVD cases watch the movies they profile? Looking at the video box of my old copy of Swing Shift, the 1984 drama about life at home during World War II, you would think you're watching an overdramatic look at patriotism run rampant.

"There was no other time like it, and it changed our way of life forever," the box's text proclaims. The movie casts "a nostalgic eye on a time when ordinary citizens bonded to accomplish extraordinary things."

One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest Review

Essential
Nicholson went nuts in The Shining, but he did the time in Cuckoo's Nest as a rough-and-tumble felon looking to escape hard prison by spending a little quality time in a psychiatric institution. Little does he realize his phony illness is about to get him into all kinds of trouble. Louise Fletcher's Nurse Ratched, however, is the character who has since entered into the American lexicon, as have a host of other characters and scenes (most memorably: Nicholson's narration of a World Series game that's not on TV). Faithfully adapted from Ken Kesey's stirring novel.

Scent Of A Woman Review

Excellent
Al Pacino got his ribbing for "hoo-ahhh!"ing his way through Scent of a Woman, but underneath the scenery chewing, there's a sweet and watchable film to be seen. Pacino is a blind ex-army man with skeletons galore, Chris O'Donnell is a prep school kid who's landed in some unexpected trouble and takes on a job watching Pacino over Thanksgiving. They learn from each other, just as each finds a way to save the life -- figuratively or truly -- of the other. Fun to watch.
