Blythe Danner has implored the public not to mock her daughter Gwyneth Paltrow for describing her divorce from Chris Martin as "conscious uncoupling".

Paltrow and Martin left fans baffled last year (14) when they announced they had decided to "consciously uncouple" after 10 years of marriage, and many critics mocked the Iron Man star for using such convoluted language to describe a divorce.

The actress' mother Danner has now spoken out in defence of her daughter, insisting she is proud of Paltrow and Martin for staying friendly for the sake of their two kids.

She tells the New York Post's gossip column Page Six, "People make fun of this... (But) they are so smart... Both incredibly brilliant. They're making it work, they're great friends and the kids are in wonderful shape. So I have to take my hat off to both of them."
